looking at car auctions such as Manheim

Anyone bought from auction?

I've got my eye on a BMW, says v5 is with Manheim and MOT expiry 2012, but is there usually a physical MOT cert with these to enable buying tax and driving away that day?

If with about 150 cars on the day, starting at 10am, what time will it end?

9 times out of 10 they will have the V5 physically there. but sometimes they dont.

In order to drive away on the day you will need to pay in full and have insurance certificate in your hand with the BMW's reg number on and go to a Post Office with the green slip, MOT and Ins.

I suggest you go to a few sales before commiting to buying, just to get a feel of the place...

How would you get an insurance cert to be able to tax it? unless you have a laptop with dongle and access to a printer maybe.
Depending on the auction it could last about 4/5 hours but the car you are after may be the first or the last to go through.

There must be a way because the garage from which I bought my car sorted out the tax before I arranged any insurance.

Buying from a garage is totally different to an auction though. Most if not all garages will have traders insurance which they will use to tax the car.

You could arange a cover note for the day on your own insurance? Or have a look around for 24 hour insurance.

Or just let the auction deliver the car for you. By which point you will have the ins and tax sorted.

there's no way of telling exactly when the auction will end - alot depends on how many punters turn up. I've often tried to time it for a lot and got it very, very wrong. if nobody is interested in the motors they can't half rattle through them!! I would be cautious and arrive early. You can always use the time to get into the bidding groove!

Take somebody with you that knows a lot more about cars than you do.

If you are going to buy something expensive like a BMW, I assume that if you are going to Manheim the car is under 5 yrs old? Then check the prices of similar cars at somewhere like CarGiant, if you aren't getting it for a grand less then you may be better off buying it with the fall back of the SOGA and a testdrive prior to purchase.

As already mentioned don't buy on your first visit, get a feel for the auction, try and watch for the auctioneer putting bids against the wall so he doesn't do the same to you, remember the auctioneer works for the seller not the buyer, and puttings bids against the wall is legal.

I've seen a specific car which is next Tuesday and some distance away, so hoped to buy and drive away, but some good points. can't get road tax without car insurance and reg etc. However didn't know there were 24 hr car insurance?

Sounds like it might be a bit more hassle than first thought.

Will try and find out cost of delivery of the car, which I assume is a fair amount no doubt when they add on huge buyers fee too

Try and find a local internet cafe close to the auction centre then if you do win it you could go and get the insurance cover for 24 hours print it out and you can go get the tax and get it home.
