Nope and manufacturing/engineering is declining in the UK at a pretty rapid rate. Whilst some of the large cities/towns may have these types of jobs available I can assure its not everywhere.
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.

OP if you live in East London (I used to) you do not need a car. Save your money for a few years then you'll be able to insure a better car.

except he'll be trying trying to insure a better car at a much higher premium with 0 years driving experience and 0 NCD.
  • you got more chance of winning the euro millions than securing a apprentice position in my area, engineering/technitians/electricians/plumbers/office's no one can accomadate one or afford to take the trainee on, the buisiness's in my area want experienced and skilled in thier field of work to run an efficient buisiness.

my OH uncle own a busy accident repair centre, he used to take on 4 apprentice a year doing their 2nd and final college year, 2 app's would have have 2 qualified engineers to teach them both sides of vehicle body repairs 1.body repair 2. vehicle spray painting last year he had to stop taking on appretice's and started taking on qualified experienced repairers because his buisiness was suffering because of time loss and efficiency, he turns over twice as many vehicles now than he used to, and has now moved to larger premisses to cope with volume eventhough he has to pay a higher wage to those he took on, his buisiness has turned over enough to justify that move, he didnt make the decision lightly and was reluctant to stop taking apprentice's but his hand was forced by his accountants as he nearly went bust.
he was losing money due to apprentice's excess time off, poeple pulling out half way through it, qualified engineers slowed down by teaching, mistake rectifactions, and less repair turn overs.

the above is an good example of why some buisiness's cant possibly make it viable to take these aprrentice's in anymore.

OP mentioned what will happen with insurance markets in the future, unfortunatly there will always be a young drivers, uninsured drivers, unlicensed drivers, drink drivers and injury claims. untill this government addresses properly these issues and regulate properly the insurance industry we will keep seeing increase in premuims.

Not all insurance has gone up- mine's just dropped to half on one car last week. Depends which company you're with. I hate comparison sites- much better to ring up and haggle over the phone. Usually nets a better deal.

There are plenty of tricks- adding additional experienced drivers, higher excess, negotiating TPFT deals with no-claims, cutting unneeded extras- I don't pay breakdown cover, for example, as there's always someone around for a tow. Limiting mileage (works sometimes, raises others), choosing a car with cheaper repair factors- there's a lot can be done to reduce costs.
