Insurance Shambles

  • Part of the problem is that you're looking at exactly the same cars that all the other people your age are looking at; Corsas, Puntos, Polos and lots of other small engined cars that teenager chav up and wrap round a tree.. Look outside the box at cars that don't suit your age; small engine doesn't mean small insurance.
Look at a bigger engined older person car and you might be surprised; Volvo, Rover, even possibly BMW's and even though i'm 35, i've noticed that 4x4's are cheaper to insure than a normal car.

If you want to get the premium down pay attention to what SC says, if you dont, carry on looking at corsas and polos, simple as.
Went shoplifting at the Disneystore today.

Got a huge Buzz out of it.

I reaffirmed your view how exactly?

I said I'm careful with my money, you said I'm not because you've had bad experiences with young drivers. I just don't see how the two, relate

Wait until you are older, 2k+all the other car related expenses you are going to have to fork out will pay for a lot of taxis.

Find a car that isn't a Corsa/Saxo/106/306 yada yada small French throwaway hatchback OP and you will find the quote will come down. For me it was a 2000 Micra 1.4 that did the trick and I wouldn't change it, have seen the light in small Japanese motoring. :D Had to use a Rover 25 1.4 for a short while around December and it was the most useless car I've ever sat in aside from 1.0 Corsas and anything French from the last 12 years.

I love how certain users in this thread have tarred all young males as suicidal drivers, I spent good money on my car and look after it. I'd rather drive defensively and keep it for a long time than have a moments impatience and end up with a Saxo attached to my right wing. But whatever, pointless trying to reason with people whose opinion is set in glue.

If its any help its not just stupid prices for male drivers. I am 23 and due to take my test soon, I got quoted on a few cars I had seen, and it was going to cost me an arm and a leg (about 2.5k) to get insured on my own car. Crazy thing is Direct line have just added me as a named driver to my partners policy for £4 a month as a provisional and said it will go down when I pass, I just don't want to use his car it's too big for me but at that price I'd be daft to turn it down!

Everything will be ok in the end, and if it isn't ok then it isn't the end :)

to be honest i reckon you could look at buying a pedal cart and you'll still be looking at around £2k. To put my wife onto my insurance takes it up to £3000, I'm only driving a 2004 1.7 diesel Civic, hardly a racer!
We looked at tiny cars, Yaris, Mini One, Fiesta, Jazz, Micra etc the other week, still looking at £2000 for then two of us.

What gets me is that insurance surely cant go up and up and up can it? there has to come a point where someone (i dont know who) says enough is enough and the insurance companies will have to be more realistic in their quotes? surely?

More than likely what will happen is that people will be priced out of the market for insurance and won't be able to get any, which means the insurance companies will then look for profit from older drivers as they lose out on these lucrative premiums and push them higher and higher.
