the child benefit was in there mothers name, so i had to get that cancelled and put in a new claim in my name, was told there is a 12 week backlog on this !!! they said that they will have to get in touch with her to confirm that she does not stay here anymore, and i dont have any contact details for her so god knows how they are going to do this ?

It will all be held up untill they get confirmation from the mother she is no longer wanting to claim. It will be held up further if she says no to this.

    hi karenx

thanks for the reply, according to the tax credits its got nothing to do with the mother as it is a new claim and the previous claim has been cancelled. but the child benefit said that yes she has to get in touch with them.

    thanks again

Tax credits can be delayed if you aren't receiving child benefits, as it's one of the ways of proving you have a legitimate claim.

if you are really really struggling you can apply for a crisis loan or a budgeting loan from the jobcentre to help you out.they are interest free and can be paid back at a few pounds a week. not ideal but it can tide you over till you get all this sorted out and back on your feet.

Have you looked at getting another part time job to bring you up to full time hours? Have you contacted the CSA to track down your wife so that she can pay child maintenance?

Make an application through the CSA for child support urgently.

Check out the Trussel Trust for food parcels.

Can you older child get work over the holiday?
