07958 879879 - Is it on your bill?

If you have used your phone abroad you might be wondering what this number is. This is on my husbands phone daily and I have had it investigated by Virgin.
At first they said text the word 'stop' to stop it, now they are saying it is a satellite number - when a call or text destination cannot be identified the satellite that transmitted it produces this number. I have to say I am a bit sceptical and we will be monitoring calls even closer.

The number on your Husbands phone bill will be the Virgin Message Centre number. If you look at your message settings, you will see this as the message centre number.
If you have used your phone abroad and sent texts they will go to this number, its your SIM sending messages back to the home network.
This is quite normal when roaming and sending texts messages which are not sent from your home network.0 -

Thanks, I don't want to doubt you, so how do you know this, as it's not what Virgin are saying?0 -
That number is the T-mobile SMS service number

Virgin use the T-mobile network when abroad apparently...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Ann is a font of all knowledge!
Here's the T mobile page; http://support.t-mobile.co.uk/help-and-support/index?page=content&id=FA850
As Virgin is a virtual network they need a 'real' network number to piggyback onto when you're out of the UK.0 -

Almost! Ann said it was the Virgin SMS centre no. which it isn't, as it's 07958 879 890. It just so happens that Virgin "borrow" T-mobiles SMS centre for texts abroad...If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

OP, you could've just googled the number and you would've got the answer. Customer services didn't know because your question wasn't on their script.0

I did google the number, but I wanted Virgin's explanation - and I don't understand how it works. It was billing I spoke to, and when I said they must know what the number is as it's all over the internet, they denied all knowledge.
So, just to get this straight then - sorry to be so thick - is it the phone sending a message, or an actual text being sent to a number that is undeterminable? If it's the phone then how can we stop it?0 -

Usually, when you send a text message, you'll see the destination number on your bill. However, when you are abroad, your message doesn't go through your standard SMS centre, but it instead gets sent to the T-Mobile SMS centre and this is the number that registers on the bill.
Does that make sense? If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands
