A good cat deterrent

Hi, does anybody know of a good way from keeping cats out of your garden. We have tried endless things. I have 2 rather large dogs roaming freely, but they risk life and death to use my garden as a toilet! It's only a matter of time before my Rhodesian Ridgeback catches one. Any info greatly appreciated.

Honestly without cat-proof fences all around the whole garden, you cannot stop a determined feline from getting into your garden. Even making it uncomfortable for them to go to the toilet there (eg water pistols, sticks stuck in the ground, chilli powder, lemon juice, cat-off gel, lion poo, all the other suggested methods) they will probably still wander through the garden. The other suggestion is ultrasonic devices but with dogs they probably aren't a good idea, depends on the frequency I suppose (I think cats can hear higher pitched sounds than dogs?).
The usual ultimate deterrent suggested is "get a big dog", since you have two, I don't know what else to suggest. They must be fearless cats. The only thing that might work if they are coming in OVER walls or fences around the whole garden, get some of those prikka strips to go on top of them to dissuade them; that is less hassle than a proper catproof fence. But I don't think it'd put off a very determined cat.
If the dogs are securely contained IN your garden, so at least the cats have the possibility of escaping up a tree or the fence, I think this is pretty much all you can do as a responsible owner.
If you know who owns them you could always have a quiet word to say you are worried about them coming in your garden and have tried everything you can to stop it but nothing has worked. At least that way they know you are aware of the problem and if the worst happens...
I mean I am a major cat lover, but I can't think what else you could do.0 -
Morg-Monster, many thanks. We have tried all of what you have mentioned even gripper rods on the fencing, all to no avail. Will try and speak to the neighbours to make them aware. Many thanks0

cats are roamers and basically go where they please..... my brother has a dog that absolutley hates cats...... and when they go into his garden ( yes they still go there despite the cat hating dog!!!) the dog goes berserk and one of these days he will defo catch one i am sure of it......
i have a few cats and i would be horrified if i lived near someone with a large cat-hating dog!!
( ps- i am not saying that your two are cat haters, i was just mentioning my brothers dog that he got from a rescue and for some reason i think he was trained to chase cats)0 -
Welcome!
Where are the cats pooping, do you have bare soil? If so try a cat unfriendly mulch such as coir matting.

I have a new cat friendly neighbour and boy can they tell as they have started congregating round the back. There are nearly as many cats as people in our tiny hamlet which consequently has become a kill zone for birds and local wildlife. In this respect I think cat owners are irresponsible, sorry. Plus I think they are a pest in themselves - so many use other peoples gardens as a toilet. Next time someones cat does this I'm going to shove a whole load of dog poo in their garden.
I set the border collie on them each time I see one (she has NO chance of catching one) but it doesn't deter them. Would love to find a sonic deterrent which didn't affect dogs.0 -
What would cat owners on THIS site think, genuinely, if cat poo was posted back into THEIR garden? My front garden is being targetted regularly by one particular cat who reside two doors away. Would any MSE contibutors let me know if I would be doing something totally unforgiveable by scooping up what belongs to that cat and delivering it to it's owner?
I am left with no other options it seems.
ThanksWilkies50 -
Next doors cats are always using our toilet as garden. We put a load of bark down for our son & had to take it all back up as the cats thought it was an oversized litter tray. We now throw back in to next doors garden! Ditto - I have similar problems - my brother lives in Italy and he used to own a hunting dog for hunting wild boar an Argentinian Dogo...
it used to catch cats and tear their heads off.
Banned over here I might add and I must admit I quite like cats myself0 -
