Breville Kettles

We've had two new Breville Kettles in the past 10 months. Both have packed in after 5 months use. Of course we can take them back to Currys and get a new one but I thought Breville would be interested. No chance, here is their reply:

Whilst it may be of little consolation to you in this instance we can refer to many thousands of this model that are providing satisfactory service, and regret that your experience is contrary to the norm.

Our products are constantly updated.

It's the fact that they 'constantly update' the products that leads you to often being unable to buy a kettle that will work for more than a couple of years or one that does not have annoying niggles.

They've been able to make almost perfect kettles for decades now and if they just settled on one design and removed the final glitches from it over a few years everything would be fine.

There have been no significant changes to the technology since they introduced the flat elements over a decade ago but they have to redesign the damn things from the ground up ever year, it seems, and no sooner do they get rid of one annoyance then there is another to take its place.

Yes, but that was my point.

A lot of kettles seem to fail after between one and three years. And it's usually some design fault. (The lid release not operating properly is a common one.)

If they stuck to one design, they could make a few minor revisions to correct those design errors and you could have a kettle that worked for a decade or longer.

It's because they start again from scratch every time that new design errors keep cropping up and you can't guarantee a new kettle will work for a reasonable length of time. This applies to expensive ones just as much as cheap ones.

I'm taking it back to Currys anyway. £50 is a lot for a kettle. Flippin sure I'm not letting anyone away with that

My 5 year old Argos Value Cookworks £5 kettle is still going strong , as is the £6 steamer bought in the sale about 4 years ago.

Wish my 5 month old kettle was still going strong - thank God we had an other, older, kettle (£10 ASDA variety), otherwise I'd have had no mugs of tea. I'm not nice unless I've had my tea :mad:

Why does someone spend £50 on a kettle in the first place?

I do agree that the customer service reply is rather pathetic.

The original model we bought was called Blue Ice and was very sexy looking. We decided to get an equivalent costing model when that packed in. Not this time though. We'll go for another make, much cheaper, and accept a refund or different product for the rest of the cash. No more Breville for me.

Did they both fail in the same way?

Yes. Just stopped working. No apparant reason. Nothing user serviceable in them so just had to take the first one back. Same's going to happen with this one.
