JCT600 want to buy my car - payment by cheque - should I worry?

Hi All,

New to this part of the forum be hopefully you can give me some advice?

I am selling my car though autotrader and had a phonecall from JCT600 wanting to buy it. A man came to view it yesterday lunchtime and offered a reasonable price which we accepted. He has spoke to my husband today and has asked if they can pick the car up on friday and give us 2 company cheques (one to the finance company - car on HP and small amount outstanding, and one to us) now we are a little cautious about letting (even a big company like JCT600) drive away with my £10,000 car!

I have got the land line telephone number from the internet and telephoned a couple of branches asking for Mr X and have been given his correct number. I have spoke to 2 people within the company and both have said Company Cheques are how we operate. One even went on to say the have just collected a £18,000 car and he is just putting the cheque in the post to the owner

Does anyone have any experience or suggestions, am I being too over cautious?

    Hi,

JCT600 are a big company but you still need to be careful.

If you do go ahead, I would insist on dropping the car off at one of their showrooms. Also make sure you get some paperwork to confirm the sale.

It does seem a little odd that a large dealer like JCT is buying cars off private sellers. I would have thought they would have plenty of px's to sell. Is you car either highly desirable or very underpriced?

Thanks - apperently they have double sold a car of my spec and need to replace it fast. There are not many of my car around and it is quite desirable (Volvo C30 R Design in White - very nice!) I priced it to sell and I believe have got a good price.

I think you are right I am going to tell hubby that we will drop off at the showroom and get the cheque from the showroom at the same time with some proper paperwork.

If the guy we are dealing with is not happy with that then tough I will wait for another buyer.

    Do you think thats sensible?

Personally, I would not accept that from anyone, big company or not. I would want to drop the car off at the garage personally and only hand over the keys once the money was sitting in my account following an immediate bank transfer.
  • Hi, I have just been alerted to your post - you are welcome to call me at our Head Office should you wish and I can make some enquiries regarding who is offering you the cheques etc if this would help? Or send information via the Customer Feedback form on our website, this would come directly to me and I can look into it for you.

JCT 600 would not accept your cheque for £10,000, so why should you accept their's?

This sounds like another one for the bank's faster payment scheme.

The limits for corporate customers are mostly high, so should cover £10,000.

If you accept cheques from them, say you will not release the car to them until your bank has confirmed the originating bank has actually paid the funds - do not assume just because your bank account balance shows the cheque has been credited that the money has actually been paid received from the originating bank.
