The age-old question: carpet or laminate in the living room? And why?

laminate, imo easier to clean up
carpets are too easy to stain if stuff dropped on them0 -
Hi
Carpet for me. If you buy a decent stain resistant you can deal with marks.
To me it's warmer and more snug. I like sitting on the floor in front of the fire and I couldn't do that on laminate

It depends on your family, lifestyle and the layout of your house. If you are likely to have things spilt, or walked through your living room (e.g. by pets or small children, or if you're lugging muddy bikes through the house then definitely laminate. If your lounge is a thoroughfare to reach the front/back door, I'd also go for laminate.
If none of those things are the case, then carpet is a nice option.Shrinking my mortgage!

Carrpet. Why would I want a photo of wooden planks printed on plastic on the floor?.................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

It is hard to argue with points made by Waffle_On.
My preference by far is carpet. Laminate feels cold underfoot, it is slippy, it collects dust which is very visible (so does carpet, but it does not show), and it is noisy underfoot. It also dents when things are dropped on it. Having lived with laminate, I hate it. But, there are reasons you might want it as given above.
As an aside, one of the funniest things I have seen is a mouse on laminate. When it realised I had seen it, it scarpered across the floor to get away, but when it came to turn, the floor was so smooth that it lost traction, and its rear end went spinning round while its front legs tried to regain control.Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0 -
Firstly, I don't like laminate - as someone else mentioned, photos of wood on plastic. But I know it's cheaper and low maintenance. So i'm answering your question as wood type flooring vs carpet and I'd suggest you could go for rug on wood as best of both worlds and the scandinavian answer (other half is a scandi). The rug is easy to clean/replace but provides the cosiness and warmth.0

What about a mix of the two??0

I have laminate with under-floor heating and also a huge rug in front of the fire.
Best thing I ever did was ripping up the old carpet. Lounge looks clean & fresh, and very easy to clean"Hope for the Best

I've had both and I much prefer the wooden type flooring with a rug .. so much easier to clean , doesn't harbour pet fleas/hair etc. I wouldn't go back to carpets in the living area ever... I also have it in the kitchen and trust me trying to clean up a 2pint rice pudding that I spilt the other day would've been a nightmare even on kitchen carpet..#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j
