Warranty on mattresses?

Options
I bought a Layezee King Size mattress from Argos back in October last year having had a similar model which had lasted for three years. It arrived and initially was very comfortable, by Christmas the springs had started to click and ping as you got into and out of the bed. Now the mattress clicks and grinds as you roll over and you can feel the springs through the top.

I know we paid over £300 for this mattress so it's not exactly a bargain basement model. But after eight months it has now got to the point where it's uncomfortable and the noise it makes when simply rolling over is enough to wake you up.

I can find no reference to the warranty offered on mattresses but I am assuming they have a standard one year warranty. As I would describe this one as 'not of merchantable quality' where would I stand with regard to a replacement, or even a part refund?

Regards,
Jason.

    Have you spoken to Argos?

All products when bought brand new have Standard 12 months guarantee.

This is your statutory right, you don't even need your receipt, if need be a credit card statement, just some proof of purchase is required.

I'll doubt your get a part refund, maybe a replacement mattress.

What statute says that every piece of consumer goods must have a twelve month guarantee?

I am pretty sure that the flip-flops that Flyboy10 bought whilst on holiday, for a pound, didn't have a twelve month guarantee, when they fell apart three months later. Or the bum-bag Mrs Flyboy bought from the poundshop, which fell apart eleven months later, I don't suppose I could take that back for a refund could I?

You need to contact Argos Direct as the mattress would have been home delivered.

They may well send someone round to inspect the mattress and see if they can repair it, if it can be repaired.

In the first instance, contact Argos Direct.

jarthurs, I'm not sure I'd have bought a new mattress that's the same as the previous one that only lasted three years! That's not a very good lifespan for a mattress. Pay more, they'll last longer and you'll save yourself a few bob in the long run.

Re. your current problem, get on to Argos and see what they say. You've had it more than six months so you may need to pay for an independent report to demonstrate it's faulty or badly made. Good luck; it might not be the most straightforward of problems to resolve.

Why not, I'm pretty sure every single mattress that I have sold has said it comes with a 12 month guarantee, at least.

None of the wording has EVER mentioned the 6 month rule or inherit fault.

I personally think that a Guarantee is different from the Sales of Goods act.

Guarantee last said number of months, normally 12, Sales of goods act covers a longer period 5/6 years I think.

I'm pretty sure you could,I may be wrong.

However most people do not take stuff back if it doesn't cost much. It's not worth the hassle.

And yes the pound shops do honour guarantees my sister worked in one for long enough.

Next time (if/when this problem is resolved) try some of the fancier chains for line-ends. My wife found our current mattress in Feather and Black 8 yrs ago, down from around £1200 to £200 to get it shifted. Very heavy, double pocket sprung, wool and all sorts, an absolute belter of a mattress. And superking(?) size too (6' wide, 6'6ish long).
