Good value?

Hello!

I will be a second year university student as of September living in a house of 7 and we are currently looking into a TV/broadband package. We are just looking for the best deal we can possibly get (as I'm sure everyone is hehe) but at the moment we are not too fussed about extras eg film channels, sports channels but will probably need a 'good' broadband service as we are 7 iplayer/itvplayer users. I so don't understand what all of the broadband packages are/mean (I'm so clueless!!) so any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Many thanks in advance for all of your help, nicoley

If you don't want premium sport or film channels, then why pay for any TV service at all? Just go for a Freeview or Freesat system that has no ongoing costs.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

I hadn't even thought of that- thanks! Do you get all the same channels as you would on a virgin box standard package?

No, you don't although the basic Virgin TV package is pretty poor overall, with only a handful of the big channels thrown in to differentiate itself from free services. It will largely depend on what channels you and your friends want as to whether it would be worthwhile subscribing to a pay-tv service in order to receive them and whether you could get these channels without having to fork over a lot of money. Virgin reserve the majority of the main channels for their L and XL packages.

It can be difficult to do direct comparisons easily, so perhaps what you should do is identify any specific channels that you and your room mates want and then see whether they're available on Freeview, Freesat, Freesat from Sky, or whether you will have to pay a subscription to receive them, and then weigh up whether it would actually be worth it.
