URGENT WARNING for all card holders esp. ABBEY.....

I will post this on the boards for Credit Cards as well. I think this is important.

I have just had a call from 'Abbey' asking me for he last 8 digits of my card as they are trying to make sure people have their cards in their possession and protect them againstfraud.

I refused to give them my number and they got very angry with me and told me that I would get called ever 5 minutes as their information needed to be updated and I would get call after call after call asking me to update it.

In the end I said that I would call Abbey to confirm this was the case and if it was then when they next called I would give the information.

Please do not give any information to these people at all. Mine sounded foreign but Abbey have confirmed they would never ask for this information over the telephone and they probably have an old receipt with the first 8 digits of my card on it. Rather scary as I am ex-directory as well so how did they get my telephone number to call me and from what company have they obtained my information?

Just a warning for everyone - apologies for posting on other boards but I thought this was just too important to ignore and it was best I let everyone know about it.

your first 4 digits are assigned to a particulate bank (i think).

They are thinking that people will be more keen to hand over the last 8 numbers but no the entire number but they know the first four allready
  • This happened to my partner last week - he is with the Abbey - was defrauded by over £1000 in 2 days. But Abbey refuded him within 48 hours, so they must know of a scam going on.

thanks for that, I had a call from a with held number claiming to be virgin asking for security details - I refused to give them and after some time managed to speak to a human a virgin who confirmed the call to me naturally I have lodged a complaint about it as we are always and wisely so been told do not give details out and that companies do not call asking for them,

    NEVER EVER GIVE INFO

I used to work for Abbey and I doubt if this call was from them. If you get a call like this do not give any details and ask for a dept and reference and call Abbeys main banking number and querie this.

As another poster has said bank cards for each bank have certain 4 digits at the start..

    example

Bank ABCS may have the following prefix used
    Credit cards will be 1234
    Debit cards will be 5678
    Electron will be 1478
    Cash cards will be 2753

these 4 digits will always be the same so asking for the last 8 digits will get them the whole number.

Another call you should never reply to is someone calling and saying theya re from a particular company and asking for your full name and date of birth as security before they will even tell you who they are. DO NOT give anyone this info.

First four are bank prefix but what about the next four? Asking for the last 8 and knowing the first 4 still only gives you 12 numbers...

I'm no expert but it might be possible to work out them numbers by using the check digit, you can tell if a card number is a valid number by doing a mathematical formula with it (spots typos 80% of the time)

Yeah Mod 10 algorithm, you might be right.

The 2nd 4 digits might be related to bank actually, two of my cards (from same bank) have similar 2nd set of digits.

No, that can't be right to be honest - how many banks are there and to just randomly call people asking if they are with X bank isn't going to work. they KNEW I banked with Abbey. How do they know your phone number and who you bank with? I thought a bank receipt and then getting number from BT but I am ex-directory - even then how do they know where you live to get the number. They specifically told me they were calling from Abbey so they knew my bank detail, full name and telephone number - address, date of birth, etc... Scary!!
