  • Morning all - I had a great day yesterday using up greezer stuff - even made a full on roast dinner with frozen turkey (frozen after Christmas Dinner), Aunt Bessies frozen duck fat roasties (they were so yummy - much nicer than the regular ones!), defrosted carrot and swede mash, peas, packet stuffing and hm yorkies and gravy. It made a lovely tea! I then ventured out to the little Tesco round the corner for milk at about 10pm and ended up spending £5 on Locozade sport lite (half price at £1.84 for 4), milk and a pack of Choca block millionaire shortbread magnum-type lollies (also half price at £1.39).

When I was in Sainsburys last week they had huge bags of frozen finely chopped veg at 2 for £1.50 - I got the carrot/onion/celery mix and it is really good - there is no peeling and I could never chop the stuff that finely.

Tonight I am using some to make a cottage pie with parsnip and potato topping, using mince from the freezer and parsnips which I bought at Christmas and which need using up. Breakfast was egg on toast and lunch is defrosted hm veg soup. I feel really full of cold and a bit fluey today so am hoping not to go out and so therefore NSD.

Now going over to the coupon thread to see what I can find!!

Just wondering, will anyone on here buy less in future as well or will you still stock up constantly on stuff when cheap? As that is partly why I've ended up with too much stuff.. was reading something in one of the minimalist websites last night about not keeping too much food in so can eat fresh more and it sounded appealing and I think I would spend less if just buying for a week or so! Of course I still want to keep spending low so will buy some regular things I get on offer but my main aim along with money saving is to actually keep less stocks!

i will be buying less as i clearly overbuy alot, but it won't be so i can eat more fresh food, i'll still bulk buy my meat as it's cheaper and once it's frozen you have more choice where as if it's in yoru fridge it needs used, i prefer frozen veg anyway and it's usually fresher in terms of nutrition than fresh veg, we already eat lots of fresh fruit, so really i won't change my shopping habits just the amount

I'm buying less now because I'm sticking to a budget, that's my mechanism to not just keep on buying and stocking up. However, stocking up in the first place has put myself in the position now where I can just sort of tick over (for a decent time at least) - I would hate to lose that "privilege" just to clear freezers and cupboards - I'd be terrified at possibly paying too much for stuff I need!!! So eating out of freezers and cupboards, combined with a budget. I do keep my fridge as low as possible (a little high over Xmas), so fresh stuff is minimal and replenished as needed (no big stocking up there), this reduces waste. I could never just live and buy on a "week to week" basis, I wouldn't feel under control - I suppose my "stash" is my "comfort". I know for certain though, having a "stash" of reduced/cheap stuff and offers vastly reduces my spending and saves a fortune. It may not work for, or suit all, but I'm pretty happy. I/we eat well at approx. 1/3 of what it could easily be and perhaps once was!!!!
    Long may it continue.

Took frozen turkey curry over to Mom & Dad's last night & enjoyed by all so that's gone :)
This morning have used up eggs, bacon, orange juice, baked beans & mushrooms from fridge. Will use up some cheese (on toast) from Christmas later & a small portion of meatball pasta bake also.

My OH is self employed, and after some months of living on near to nothing, i've now got the attitude, if we've got money i will stock up as much as possible, then in our poorer months we eat out from our stores. So over the year it evens it's self out. Our fridge/freezer is brimming at the moment which is good, as he's just about to start a new job and goodness knows when the next pay cheque is coming!!

    So,

Today, cottage pie out the freezer for lunch, yoghurt for breakfast and i have made salad to use up the fresh bits that are at risk of going off when i'm away this weekend.

Am not back till tuesday, so unless a miracle happens and OH actually cooks something i'll have no need to shop again this month. :T:T unless there are good lidl deals on...

  • Ended up spending around £20 yesterday after a round trip to 3 supermarkets. In my defence £4 was a gift for a kids b/day party we have coming up, £3 on nappies plus teabags, sugar and a few other essentials. Managed to get a cheese and onion pie for 30p, 6 yoghurts for 20p (still with 2 days left on date) some rolls for 44p and salad for 30p.

However...had to take my car in to the garage at 1.30. Hadn't had any lunch and with an hour to kill...well I couldn't avoid the chip shop (woops)

Problem is I got steak out for dinner and now i'm not hungry...
