What happens now? It was given to me by a friend years ago as a genuine version, although I think it was a corporate version. Its been no trouble until now and checked by the validation tool all along. Will I lose any word documents?

I also have it on another pc in the house but I have not been able to get to that pc for about a week due to home improvements so I don't know if the same thing will be happening on that plus its also on my daughters laptop and she really needs the microsoft office for work.

    OK,
    If its a retail licence......
You say your Friend "gave" you it.
First question did he/she remove it from his/her PC when she gave you it - or did they just given you the disks & licence key and continue to use their copy?
A standard retail edition of Office 2003 is for 2 licences only. For example your Desktop and a laptop.
So if your friend is still using it and you now have the same licence key installed on is it 3 PC's at home you have it on 4 PC's in total and if you friend is not using it it's "only" on 3 PC's
Sorry but whichever way you play it you are in effect using it illegally and MS are right to block it

If it was originally a corporate licence..........
I've no idea how many conditions you and your friend might have broken..as I've no idea of the T&C's of the corporate licence. I'd imagine it will be for a certain number of installations only (might be 5,10,15,200 - it depends) and only to be used by PC's linked into the corporate network in some way.

A fair amount of drama..... it can also be an OEM licence.

Nothing is blocked, it's just an annoying notification that the OP installed as an update.

    office-genuine-advantage-notifications.jpg

According to KB949810, once a computer has been determined to be running a copy of Office that has failed the Office Genuine Advantage validation process, a message will be displayed during Office program startup:

This copy of Microsoft Office is not genuine.

Please excuse this interruption. This copy of Microsoft Office did not pass validation. Click Learn More for details and for help identifying the best way to get genuine Microsoft Office.

And, a Toolbar will be added to non-genuine Office XP and Office 2003 programs or a ribbon element is added to non-genuine Office 2007 programs to display “This copy of Office is not genuine. Click here to learn more” message.

If this was the case then it looks as though MS have twigged that it is being abused and have now blacklist that corporate/ volume licence key.

It sounds like you have had free use of MS office against the licensing terms for 7 years. Why not spank £70 on a copy of Office Home and Student edition and go legal, or remove MSOffice and use Open Office instead? MS have explained that the software key your friend gave you is not legal to use, so looking for ways around that is piracy.

You can get it cheaper than that if you are in education, from software for students. Microsoft office 201 pro is only 37.89

Some are, some are not. For the people who don't know the difference, it's best to leave it on.

While my daughter was at uni she was burgled and lost everything including her laptop and back up hardrives so she was in a huge mess having lost all her work and back ups, we could not afford another laptop at the time and this person stepped in to help by sending her an old unused laptop with the corporate version already installed but he also wrote the key down and told us it was a genuine version so not to worry. That is how we got it.

I havent run the mga tool yet, is it worth running it? this is an xp pro machine
    Thanx

As I've written... Don't make drama. It's nothing serious. Just remove the update in the way that I have shown and then forget about it. :)

I too have had this annoying thing pop up each time I go to microsoft word, and delete it every time but it comes back. Getting used to it and have accepted that a) either it is an illegal copy or b) it isn't but don't know how to remove the pop-up
