Given that over in Ireland they get BBC and ITV free (without even the BBC license fee), does anyone know why we cant get RTE over here (okay yes I know they arent great but am only interested in their sporting content)?
Also, anyone know how one might be able to receive RTE over here?

We get it as part of the Sky package over here or via aerial, but the reception is rubbish where I live.0

I get it on Virgin. Used have some good movies on way before the UK usually uncut as well.
Oh they pay a licence in Ireland for tv too, so its not really free for the BBC and ITV.0 -

However it was Corination Street that stopped NTL (as it was then) from putting RTE on the NTL Network.
Corry started earlier on RTE & UTV objected on the grounds that people would see adverts for a company down South & not for a company in,say,Belfast..0 -
The reason RTE is not available in England, Scotland and Wales is simply a rights issue, in the same way French or German TV is not intended to be received here. They pay a price for their programmes based on the viewers it can reach and so is a lot cheaper then a UK rights holder would pay. Northern Ireland receive it on Sky because it is available to most there through an ariel so the rights cover them as well. Even then if for example the rights to a live sporting event is owned in the UK by another company RTE is blocked for Northern Ireland on Sky for the duration of the programme.0

BBC through their aerials but that there is no reciprocity in us being allowed to receive RTE - such is life I spose0 -
In Northern Ireland RTE1 and RTE2 will be on Freeview HD (MPEG4 AVC/DVB-T2) in standard definition.0

... in late 2012 when we finally get FreeviewHD. I'm not sure that the whole Republic gets BBC - are you sure it's not just border counties receiving from northern tranmitters?0
