Moving to Tunbridge Wells

Can't comment on the schools but I've lived in TW for 11 years and love the place (I'm actually in the process of moving out of the area and it won't be easy!).
It's got everything you need; restaurants, cafes, bars, shops (Fenwicks and Hoopers are excellent!) and still has a friendly atmosphere that is hard to find.0 -
TW is nice. Property values are expensive, but if you're moving from London it's acceptable. Some roads are amazing with lovely houses. The town has decent shops and restaurants and a good train link to London. Downside are congestion which can be utterly awful - gridlock happens a few times a year. If you or your partner need to hit the M25 it's grim on the A21. It can be on the snobby side, but it's handy for a lot of the South Coast. The man without a signature.0

Kent has the 11+ exam still. That means the majority of secondary schools are going to be "the really bad ones". We cannot magic up excellent non-grammar schools for your (no doubt) brilliant children. If you want your children to go somewhere "decent" for free, do like us and buy a house near an excellent primary, and hope nature has done the rest.
You can't just turn up five minutes before term starts expecting to get into a grammar school. And your plan of going on a waiting list sounds somewhat optimistic.
Thanks for the info friendly horse. A lot of assumptions here. Just looking for primaries at this point, not secondaries grammar or otherwise. My brilliant (or not as the case may be) children are only little. We're not turning up 5 minutes before because we just thought it'd be fun, we've been looking for almost 6 months and have been not been successful with bids.
Are you always this cheery!?0 -

I think you have some anger issues there Mr Horse0 -

Unfortunately, that's how a lot of people 'think they know' TW. I'd like to know how many of them have spent more than a day there, lived there, spoken with people in shops, or residents...
It's still dragging round the 'disgusted in Tunbridge Wells' tag that it's been carrying for many, many years.
Why can't someone quote one of the positive comments and say 'sounds like a nice, pretty, friendly, happy place to live'.
Shame.

Amazing that some people hate the place because of a program they've seen on TV or basing their views on class prejudice.
Think about where most of the "really nice" places are to live. They are middle class places like TW's. They are nice because these people have respect and morals and don't go around robbing others. Now someone is going to reply that I live in a working class area and blah blah. Well even TW will have it's share of crime and the odd Herbert who peddles drugs, but it's nowhere on the scale as some inner city ghettoes. The man without a signature.0 -
Hi Lopez
I used to live in Tunbridge Wells, lived there for about 10 year (now living up north in Leeds).
It is an expensive area - in fact, some would say VERY expensive.
Nice areas to look at, in my opinion, are St Johns Road going up towards Southborough. Some lovely houses just off The Pantiles and in that area as well. Parts of Broadmead/Broadwater Down are very nice.
Like anywhere in the country, there are also areas to avoid as well. Don't want to list them on here in case it causes "insult" to others.
Can I please be cheeky, and ask why Tunbridge Wells? Is there a specific reason? There are other places nearby that are just as nice. Such as West Malling/Kings Hill (although Kings Hill was very expensive, not sure how it is these days), Mereworth, Tonbridge, parts of Sevenoaks.
Please feel free to PM me if you need to, and good luck with your move.
