Can anyone help me please. I have been given a netbook(which was my dads) and I cannot connect to my wireless settings.
We have a couple of laptops in the house that work wirelessly without any problems and the net book picks up my router but connects for only two seconds and then drops. I have had a read of previous postings but I am confused and would need a step by step instruction please.
n.b my dad used an ethernet cable with a booster as he couldnt get a good connection in his flat.
I have done ipconfig/all and for the wireless bit it says that media disconnected physical address 19-02-16-08-01-72
Atheros AR5007EGwireless network adapter.
any assistance will be gratefully received.
thank you

Make and full model number?
Have you run a Factory reset of late?
Have you installed all of the updates since then?0 -
From the ipconfig/all command, you should be able to see if DHCP is enabled and check which IP address has been given to the laptop.
The IP address must be unique on your network and your router should allocate a spare address to each PC / Laptop as they connect to the router.
Which version of Windows is it on the netbook ?
P.S.
It is not recommended to post your network card physical address on these forumsThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
When you try and connect has the WiFi asked for a "passphrase" or a similar ?
Who connected the other laptops ?
There are a number of possible causes of this problem.
Is the Netbook running XP ?
Often this kind of problem is a wrongly entered "passphrase" or "key".
In XP right click on the WiFi symbol
Then click on "status"
Then click "View Wireless Networks"
Then click "change advanced settings"
Then click the "wireless networks" tab at the top.
Click on your wireless network (if you see it) and then click "remove".
If you have any "wrong settings" this should get you another chance to enter them.
If your network isn't there then click on "view wireless networks".
Do you see your network ?
What happens when you attempt to connect by clicking on your network ?0 -
Thank you for your quick replies. in response
stilltheone - Samsung n110 - no factory resets-all updates on automatic
BAA1 - XP
Im just careful- When I first turned the netbook on it immediately found my connection and asked for my network key, connected for two seconds and then disconnected. I connected the other laptops as they auto found them. I have done what you suggest removing my network and then redoing it which again lets me connect for two seconds.
Thank you0 -
given that this is xp, make sure u have service pack 3 installed -- anything below can cause wireless issues and incremental disconnections with newish routers .A new abacus

I'm starting to wonder if the other laptops have been "associated" with the WiFi router using "mac address filtering".
Different routers have different names for this and you can set this up by logging into the router.
What make is the router ?0 -
Also I would like to know as to whether Windows(Zero Configuration) or the Atheros Client Utility is handling the Wireless connection.
Take a look in the Device Manager and let me know which Driver version is currently installed. To access Device Manager, use any of the four following methods:
Click Start, click Run, and then type devmgmt.msc.
Right-click My Computer, click Manage, and then click Device Manager.
Right-click My Computer, click Properties, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
Type the following command at a command prompt:
start devmgmt.msc
To get information about the driver for a device using the Device Manager, perform the following steps:
Double-click the type of device you want to view.
Right-click the specific device and then click Properties.
On the Driver tab, click Driver Details.0 -
hi
Under device manager I have the following;
Atheros AR5007EG Wireless network adapter
Bluetooth LAN Access Server driver
Marvell Yukon 88E8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller
I dont want to twiddle with the router as all the other laptops and computer have worked fine. My son also has an ipad that linked upto it straight away. My sister has also tried to wireless connect to her router in a different part of the country on the netbook and has the same problem with it- connects for two seconds then disconnects
All double dutch to me lol- thank you for your continued help. x0
