I am planning to move to Edinburgh with my partner and 1 year old daughter. For those who are familiar with the city which are the cheaper areas to live for easy access to Sighthill (Napier University). I am also open to commutinng. I have a budget of up to 500 pounds per month.
Thanking you in advance for the help

Thanking you in advance for the help
for Sighthill you have massive choices
realistically EH11 is the most convenient,EH12 and EH14 are nearby
budget will dictate where you are going to go for
theres plenty of rental stuff in Sighthill itself and the nearby Calder/Parkhead
moving down into Gorgie/Dalry there is loads of choice
you could move out the city a bit to Juniper Green/Currie but bear in mind Edinburghs traffic situation and its recent accolade of 2nd most congested city i the UK0 -
Sighthill is almost at the western city boundary, so congestion in the centre won't be an issue if the OP commutes from close by, or from West Lothian - however, it can get a bit slow on the city bypass in rush hour.0

never sat nose to tail on the Calder road in the morning?
Lot of traffic funnels through that area in the morning and its something to bear in mind got time and costs0 -
For £500 you might struggle to get a decent place. Two bed flats are currently renting @£625pm thats in Sighthill Drive so anything further into town will be similar. You don't really want to be looking at the Calders so you might want to think about a bigger budget.0

Look to the gorgie/dalry area - you'll get more for your money and the area seems to be picking up a lot. also on bus route to the campus
(have driven the road many a time!)

Gorgie/Dalry definitely something to look into - a very "studenty" area so not sure how it would suit a young family.
Personally, I would never consider going anywhere near Calder - have a look at some of the streets on Google Maps. Although this is something you may have to consider with your budget.
Have you worked out your budget with the student grants/loans you would be able to get?
Have a look on Gumtree to get an idea on prices and areas available.0 -
Thanks guys for your posts. I have no doubt that they will help me in making the right decision.0

Also think about parking out there - you want to park close to the campus so your car will be safe and the car parks will be reserved for staff and students with permits so the streets will be pretty parked up. Most of sighthill is fine but there are the odd pocket as there is with most large estates which I personally would avoid leaving my car in. Bus is really your best bet - cheaper and easier.0
