Main dealer, take proof of ownership, and also the VIN number, this is under the bonnet that you probably can't open without a key - but it should also be written on your MOT cert.

Hope it's not parked where it may pick up tickets or get towed away.

If you are a member of AA/RAC etc, they may be able to get it home for you.

If it's an oldish car, you may well be able to find a local locksmith (or a "dodgy" character from your local pub) who can open the door for you.
This won't help with starting it, but at least you will be able get the handbrake off and get it towed somewhere else if need be.

Is it possible that you locked the key in the car, or can't you do that with the model you own?

Following on from the post by Sally A, the VIN number is sometimes visible through the windscreen. (it may be on a plate on the dash)

hiya thanks no the car is parked outside my house so no worries about tickets etc just so frustrated with myself for losing it...even lost my house key but thankfully left a window open....

do i actually have to go to the dealership or can i do it over the phone...rang a locksmith who said he can do it at the roadside but he wanted 145 which seemed a lot.
  • no the key is not inside i stupidly got drunk friday night locked my house door walked up the street and back and lost the key somewhere from my house to two blocks up the road have retraced my steps a million times but nothing lol

Would it be worth walking along the same route that you did yesterday and putting a few flyers up offering a reward for the keys?
If you consider doing this, don't give your name or address on the poster due to there also being a house key missing. You could give a mobile number or an e-mail address.

If they don't turn up soon, it would also be a very good idea to get your house lock changed as well. This isn't usually too expensive provided that you can just change the cylinder assembly. (your house insurance may well cover this anyway).

    Is the car very valuable?

I only ask because if it's stolen, the insurance company may ask why you haven't got two keys and then try to refuse the claim.

This could happen if it's stolen in a year's time in an incident entirely unrelated to the loss of the key.

Some people say you should inform the insurance company, but the problem with that is they may insist on new locks, or getting the car's electronics reprogrammed so the old key won't start it.

After i lost my keys i tied a big piece of coloured ribbon onto them, at least they're easier to see if i drop them again, now i put it around my neck and inside my shirt.
It's like being back at school again but so long as nobody can see it.
