What happens if you do not format the card on a regular basis is it can get corrupted as all the little bits of data are not cleared off completely when you only delete pictures.

There should be a menu item on the camera which allows a re-format of the card. Usually part of the tools menu. If you have either a Nikon DSLR or Lumix I can do step by step instructions.

  • Hi,

You should be able to use it still

try going to "My Computer" then right click on the SD card (f: in your case) and click open.

it should have all the pictures there, its annoying but its a quick fix.

If you put the card back in the camera, can you browse the pictures on the camera?

If so, find the USB lead that came with the camera, plug it into the camera and a USB port on the PC, and when the PC recognises the camera as an external drive, Explore the folders within it, and find the pictures you still need to copy.

Copy/paste these onto the hard drive on your PC.

DO THIS BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE, ESPECIALLY FORMATTING THE CARD - IF YOU FORMAT THE CARD, YOU WILL LOSE ALL THE PICTURES ON IT

Have you tried rebooting your PC?
This happened to me once and it occurred because I'd accidentally 'ejected' my card reader drive. Rebooting enabled it again and it was able to read my SD card.

Cause of problem: not reformatting the SD card in the camera often enough.

Solution: use Recuva to get the files off your SD card. Do this before you re-format

  • I don't have any suggestions, but can anyone offer tips to prevent it from happening? (I take a lot of pictures and am now worried it could happen to me!) How do you reformat an SD card in the camera? How often is enough?
