    May be a bit expensive.... Supurb 4x4 or a A4 Avant quatty.

    A friend of a friend had an A4 estate, standard 2wl drive, a lot smaller inside than my present car,

    Not sure what a supurb is?.

    I'm rapidly approaching 60 y of age, I want the next car to be fit for purpose and ideally be suitable as a last car, so the brief;

    lugging family stuff around, take me fishing with all the gear that that entails, have room for me to sleep in the back on occaission, be economical in my terms, and;

    be pleasant to drive around day to day, and not be a concern regarding longevity and reliability.

    Ok, I'm looking for something that maybe does not exist, but the Skoda comes close,

    Any suitable Volvo?
    I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

    Legacy is really the only car you should be considering - if you are sure you cant stretch to one then try for an Octavia or scout. I like the x type too but the early one's went wrong alot, not sure if they resolved this later on.

    Since he actually wants to go offroad, the Legacy Outback would be a better choice, since it's basically the same car only with higher ground clearance

    Ground clearance isn't the issue fella, keeping moving over flat slippy ground is, ;)

    Fair enough, you didn't specify what type of offroading.

    Apart from ride height they're the same car anyway.

    Jaguar X-Type might be one you hadn't thought of?

    4x4 x-types are petrol only, 2.5 or 3l. very heavy on the fuel but tremendous fun to drive.

    The ideal would be a 3.0l with a lpg conversion.

    If that's the case I'd also suggest looking at the type of 4wd the car has too. I believe the Skoda has the haldex system from the golf, TT and A3 but the A4, A6 etc has a torsen system.

    Hi Seb, good to hear from you. I will research that, but for my benefit and that of others can you outline the differences?

    All I know of this is it's either permanant, selective or automatic, (no, I don't know what I'm talking about), ;)
