As above, and I have asked this before but directions change.
I will be changing the car soon if things go to plan.
Want to buy at 1 to 2 years old
Need an estate
Want a diesel variant
Want economy
But quite possibly want a 4 wheel drive car, yes I do go off road on occaisions, (intentionally).
So can you guys give me a short list of suitable cars?
An obvious starting point is the Skoda Octavia, available in 4x4, Subaru too but expensive.
Estates please, don't need the height/squatness of a tradtional 4x4,

The honda accord tourer for the sheer size of that boot, not sure if they do a 4x4 variant though. A4 advant allroad?? Can't think of many that offer 4x4 .Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.0

Obviously there's a price premium to pay for this but from what I've seen in autotrader, they seem to hold their price pretty well due to there not being many on the road, couple that with the last couple of winters we've had!
They are very popular with vets, or so a salesman at my local Skoda dealer told me.0 -
Scout is expensive to buy and rare on the used market, Yorkshire AMbulance service have had Scouts for two years now and they are very robust, I have been told that you can now order them with a DSG box.
Though I must admit after driving a Legacy for 4 yrs I woudl be tempted by one of the previous shape ones in diesel and estate form, would have to be manual but they are so well built that it isn't funny.
Most reliable car I have ever owned, not the cheapest, but never let me down.
There is also the Forester, also available in diesel.
There is also the Yeti, but they are expensive aswell.0 -
Economy and 4x4 hardly go together in the same sentence.
Panda 4x4?
Jaguar X-Type might be one you hadn't thought of?0 -
Legacy is really the only car you should be considering - if you are sure you cant stretch to one then try for an Octavia or scout. I like the x type too but the early one's went wrong alot, not sure if they resolved this later on.
Don't vauxhall do a 4wd insignia? Might be very hard to find one but worth checking out.0 -

No they don't well that's what I thought untill recently.
Main issue is the carrying capability of the average 4x4 now I don't mean the big beasties, I'm thinking quasqai, the honda crv, toyota rav4 etc, the shapes all wrong for my use, ie too much unusable height and won't accept the longest gear I need to carry without intrusion into the front passenger area, my Renault estate beat these hands down in that respect but I do go off road, not in extreme conditions but several of the rivers we visit have access across farn trackes and meadows, fine when dry but that's a very short season and it's easy to get caught out when the weather changes.
The comparisons I've used are because 2 of us use our cars in rotation for these journeys, a simple estate car is far better for my purpose.
The initial comment about economy?, after 3 years with the Honda crv matey had it swapped for a Toyota rav4, it's a 2.2 diesel, the things doing 55mpg over the last 1000 plus miles and that's general moting/commuting :T
Insignia?, forgot about that 1, thanks for the advice and if there's any more........................I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
