Slow internet, exhange NOT Unbundled. Help!!!

Options
I and a few others in the village suffer slow broadband at peak times. At 2:00 am, speed is just fine, so there's an obvious contention ratio problem.

Unfortunately our local exchange has no LLU, so I cannot sign up to a faster provider.

What can we do?
Does anyone have any experience of successful campaigns to improve broadband speed or introduce LLU into village exchanges?

I'm tired of being fobbed off with lousy speeds by the underlying monopoly supplier (BT).

  • I've not heard of successful campaigns to introduce LLU. However there are a growing number of campaigns started by active residents; we're attempting to get someone to tender to put in a private broadband solution in our village.

Perhaps start by taking a look at one such provider:

However do check what's available to you first. Have a look at companies called VFast and Kijoma who supply wireless broadband you might be able to avail yourself of (very local/regional so you'd need to be lucky!)

One option is to abandon the landline altogether and try a 3G service. The exchange is not as far as I know contended here, but the lines are pretty decrepit and useless for broadband (we could only get 1.5Mbps even though we're not far from the exchange and have quite a short line, it's just very poor quality) but we do get a service from Three which doesn't really drop below 3Mbps

    Here's what we get:

The upstream is normally a bit quicker than that result (1.5Mbps is usual) but the downstream is typical.

Rural areas can do well with 3G connections because the contention is low, since fewer people use it, but you'll need decent cell coverage.

Sorry, but knowing BT you are stuck.

I experienced an exchange on which congestion started in 2004 (6 months after enablement) and has continued ever since. There are short periods of reasonable service, but for perfect speeds you need to be online in the early hours.

It is very much different between exchanges. I eventually moved away (yes, poor Internet was an influence) and have perfect quality ADSL off a BT ADSL line, using exactly the same service and at the same cost.
  • [FONT=&quot]We have the same problems out here in the sticks,BT suck but no you no other choice, The good one i liked was vote for your exchange to be upgraded oh i laughed you need over 1000 votes but our exchange only services 900 houses.BT abuse their position to the MAX when they can get away with it.When i go to my daughters in Bristol she gets speeds i can only dream of & this from 3G.BT should hang their heads in shame dragging us down to a third world country when i comes to B/B outside major cities.

Perhaps it's time we all started lobbying our MPs and Offcom.

Actually, there is one ISP who will kick BTs !!!!!! into gear by getting them to put you on a less congested VP or getting them to increase capacity at your exchange. They're called AAISP. They're expensive though:eek:
