Whats the difference between HD Ready and Full HD

Options
Hi,

I'm looking to buy a new tv. Probably 42" but poss a bit bigger. I'm just wondering what the difference is. I've got sky hd but I'm not sure if my current tv is HD ready or full HD.

Also any recommendations will be gladly taken on board. Not looking to spend more than £700 but have seen some Samsung and LG at around £550.

Thanks

Its down to the resolution of the screen.
An HD ready TV, aside from having an HDMI interface has to have a vertical resolution of 720 lines.
A full HD television will have a vertical resolution of 1080 lines.

To use the higher resolution you would need a Blue Ray player or PS3, as these are capable of 1080 progressive resolution.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Also HD ready dont have a HD free-view tuner built in, you need to buy a separate HD freeview box, to watch HD tv on freeview.

Thanks both. I don't have a blu ray player or ps3. Just sky HD and stream films through my xbox some times. I'm assuming HD ready will be fine then. Also don't need built in freeview due to the sky box.

One last question. Is there a great difference between LCD, LED and plasma?

If you are going for a 42"+, get FULL HD. Not a Plasma; too much lag.

If you are streaming it's not a big step to stream in 1080p.

I've never heard anyone on here have a good word to say about plasmas.

Thats a sweeping statement, and a wrong one at that
Which 'lag' are you referring to anyways? Pixel response time or input lag?

I have had two 50" plasmas and loved them both.

Still have one now and its awesome.

There you go now you have heard a good word.

Plasma are excellent, when they are right, but used to suffer from screen burn from channel logo's that are on all the time. (You see a ghost of the logo, even on a channel with no logo.)
They also suffer from picture bleed where the plasma affects an area, instead of the actual location intended.

My Son indulged in a top quality plasma, but is LCD now after the tube went pear shaped with picture bleed.
LED's are looking excellent, but not long enough in the tooth yet, to judge longevity of system.

People are judging LCDs and Plasmas based on one or two tvs which is completely wrong. Every make and model is different. Even some of the same models are different!
And you can get two generations completely different in some respects
Some samsungs for example had some of the worst recorded input lag going. Then the next generation had the best recorded input lag. Then after that they were more or less in the middle
The only thing anyone could say about any tv is pixel response time is bad on LCDs and LEDs (Compared to plasmas) , which is purely down to physics. Everything else is down to the make and model at the time.
To state that all LCDs have bad input lag or all plasmas sufer from judder or whatever is completely wrong.
