We got rid of the PS3, the Wii and only allow DS on PC for 1 hour a week. He has no choice but to read, but we are lucky he loves it. I would rather spend £40 on books than spend that same money on a computer game.

I'm currently teaching my younger 2 the joys of reading.

I have a boy and a girl, I said I had a surprise for them after school, my DD was squealing with excitement when she saw them. My son turned his nose up and asked if I had ordered his lego yet. Nope, forgot.

My 8YO DD loves to read and she has almost finished that big Jaqueline Wilson one, my 7 YO DS can read but it would be the last thing he wants to do - he is above average in reading at school so it's not a big deal. I am certainly not going to force him if he does not want to as he will see reading as a chore rather than something to enjoy. I am certainly not going to force him and make his life miserable by taking all of his toys away and leaving him with a book.

Some kids are readers, some are not. My DS is more of a 'making stuff' child and DD is more of a creative child.

Mumof3boys - can I tell you what my son LOVES reading? Horrid Henry. I really did not want him reading those books to be honest, but he absolutely loves them and we pretty much have every one now. I also have Horrid Henry talking books and give them the books and put the CD on, they will pick up the book. This is the only thing that my son will read out of choice, you just have to find the right stories to catch the imagination. Horrible Histories are quite good too. Can you see the theme that is reoccuring for boys here..... :rotfl:

Instead of buying them, take them to the library and let them choose a few because then it'll not cost you anything. In the summer holidays, Libraries usually had some sort of readinging incentive going on so the kids pick books and then get awarded a certificate at the end of the summer if they have read 12 books (just 2 a week), you might find this more useful. They can even read non-fiction, but reading, is reading. You just have to find the right books to capture their attention.

  • Hello everyone,

My name is John Gerrard and I work for Scholastic Book Fairs. I’m very happy that you’re enjoying our summer book sale – I can see you’ve got some really good bargains already! The sale is open until midday 1st July 2011. As a new user, this site won’t allow me to post links but the sale link is already up here.

I thought I’d just answer a few of the questions that have come up on this forum.

Scholastic Book Fairs’ main business is supplying books and resources to schools (if you have young children you might remember the Scholastic Book Fair arriving in school for a week), but at certain times in the year we hold stock clearance sales.

These usually take place in our warehouses across the UK and Ireland twice or three times a year. You can find out where and when the next warehouse sales are by visiting our warehouse sale site (that I’m not permitted to mention – just go to Google and type in ‘Scholastic warehouse sale’ to get there). You can also sign-up for email reminders by emailing me at booksale@scholastic.co.uk.

We have recently reduced the number of locations in which we hold warehouse sales, so to give access to bargain books to those who don’t live near a warehouse, we started the online sale. We run these three times a year and if you send your email address to booksale@scholastic.co.uk, I will update you about future sales.

Some of you have mentioned the lack of a facility to pay online. I do understand your concerns as it does seem a little out-of-date. The reason for this is very simple. The online sale is a relatively new project for us and we are actively exploring an online payment system to make the process easier for our customers, but at the moment it’s not something we can offer. So, anybody who makes a purchase will receive a call from our lovely Customer Service team and credit/debit card details will be taken over the phone (unless you are a verified school in which case we can invoice you directly).

I hope this helps, but if anyone has any more queries, please post them on the forum or email me directly at booksale@scholastic.co.uk.

Thanks – and happy bargain hunting!

    John
  • So impressed with the fab prices, great service and speedy delivery that myself and some of the girls at work have just placed another order :)

Hi John, I'll be signing up for the email reminders - thanks for that! I don't think I live near any of your shops so the online clearance is great for me.

If you're still around, I'd just like to say how lovely your staff are and a big public thank you to Carol, who was really helpful on the phone and sorted out a mix up with my order for me. Very impressed, and hope to order again in the future! :T
