Paphos in August. advice please!

Hi. OH and I will be going to Paphos, Cyprus for a fortnight at end of August for two weeks, for DS2's wedding. Will be taking euros but have couple of queries. Are traveller's cheques a good idea or not? Also would you take a credit card or a debit card as back up (scared of running out of euros - hav'nt been to Cyprus before and have no idea of prices of things). Would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

The prices in Cyprus are pretty much the same as here. A little cheaper if anything.
I haven't used travellers cheques in years. I usually get a bit of local currency before I go and then use my debit cards if I need more cash. There may be cheaper ways of doing it but withdrawal fees (if any) are tiny if looked at in the context of the overall cost of the holiday.
Essentially, as far as money goes I just do the same as I would at home.0 -
Thanks for advice. Will take debit cards - have already been stung for extra £68 for paying for holiday with credit card which was very annoying. Think we will forget travellers cheques. Thanks again.0

Paphos will be very, very hot. You'll also be dripping wet through with sweat from mid-morning until very late afternoon.
So don't plan on spending too much time outdoors between 1000-1500.
You'll only find Paphos prices on a par with UK if you are on AI. If you eat out all the time and like a few drinks then you'll need loads of dosh.
Beware the Paphos taxi !!!!!!0 -

I suppose it's horses for courses and depends on where you choose to eat/drink. Compared to places like France, I have found Cyprus positively cheap! If you are self catering, groceries certainly cost no more than here.
Likewise, everybody is different but even spending all day outdoors I've not found the heat too bad either even in July and August, although aircon is a must if you want to sleep well at night. I don't bother with it in the car.
Edit: I've just remembered a place I have found it unbearably hot... Nicosia. Definitely best avoided between 10:00 and 15:00 in high summer.0 -
Check out my favourite table! Last Restaurant on the harbour , nearest to the water. Sit and watch the fish .0

Best avoided for all of July and August I'd suggest! Nicosia sits in a bowl and has high humidity. People who live there leave the city as much as they can in the summer months.
Paphos in August? It'll be hot but as long as you drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids, make use of the shade and watch for burning winds then it should be lovely.

I'll buy that. Trouble is if all you are doing is chasing the shade all day to avoid the sun you ain't seeing much of place outside of Paphos.
Even driving round with a/c on full belt isn't much fun.
Many Brit expats return to UK for July and August to enjoy the UK summer.
Spring and Autumn are by far the best times to visit.0 -

That's why I don't bother with it. You never get a chance to get acclimatised to the heat if you are dodging from one air conditioned haven to another. I like to take a lot of photos so I'm constantly getting in and out of the car.0 -
Thanks for all your comments. Must admit, the thing I have been most worried about is the heat. Will take your advice and stay in the shade for the middle of the day! Not a holiday I would have chosen for this time of year, but DS and fiancee want this kind of wedding - so be it. OH and I are staying in a lovely hotel (well it sounds lovely!) so should be able to cope with the heat. Am economising like mad and trying to earn more money to cover the cost though. Kids !!!0

There aren't many people who live in the UK for most of the year who can acclimatise to the the extreme heat and humidity of July/August on the Cyprus coast.
Travelling around in a tin box without a/c is like being in a furnace whether you are regularly getting out or not.
I'm surprised you camera works properly, must be a good 'un;)0
