Need advice on where i stand for Refund on Sony TV

Hi guys and girls,
We bought a Sony TV from Comet in Oct 09 - It was on an offer at £499 so we bought it. It has a THREE year warranty....anyway, shortly after installing it, we noticed the picture was really poor quality (but of course you cant see that in store when they are hooked up to Blu Ray HD DVD players etc....
) The sound was really vibrating and the EPG didnt work. Anyway we put off getting it sorted as soon after I found out i was pregnant and had to start job hunting again as i was facing redundancy...anyway its only now the baby is 10 months old that I have really had time to focus on sorting the TV out.
It is still within the warranty with Sony. We contacted them and explained the situation. They sent a repair guy out who fixed the sound and EPG but the picture quality he said was not a fault, just bad quality...
Since he left a few more faults have come up (signal dropping out even though we had our arial checked and it was perfectly fine before hand, channels not changing, tv freezing etc)
I contacted Sony again and requested a refund as for the same money we could get a MUCH better tv! They have refused saying that they will come out and repair the other faults but the picture is not a fault.
I told them I could not have reasonably seen this in store as the sales guy even said they were all hooked up to DVD players no arial signal.
They have said i will have to write in and explain and they will have a look at the case but its unlikely i will get refund.
I was under the impression I hadd to give them the opportunity to remedy the situation and if still dissatisfied i could request refund.....Can I? We paid on card so is it worth just asking for a refund from them?
PS - my sister had the same problem with the same TV but took it back and got a refund within the same week....I just never had the time
Thanks everyone in advance....
Alex

I think they probably should come out more than once before you can expect a full refund, I know I had a tv from pc world and it developed a fault and an egineer came out once then it happened again just before the warranty expired so I put my foot down and demanded a full refund and they obliged, I would say give them a 2nd oppertunity to put it right and if you are still not happy then ask for the refund.0

Which model is it? In what way is the picture of a really poor quality? Chances of you getting a full refund after such a long time are close to zero.Gone ... or have I?0

So you're complaining about the quality of a TV bought in 2009 and 2 years later you want a refund because you're unhappy with the picture quality?????
Please tell me this isn't for real.2014 Target;
To overpay CC by £1,000.
Overpayment to date : £310
2nd Purse Challenge:
£15.88 saved to date0 -
Sounds like someone needs some cash and is looking for alternatives to a loan.0

Just to add, if you do get a refund it won't be anywhere close to what you paid, since you have had 2 years use of the product.0

You will NEVER get a refund of any sort from Sony.
You never paid them any money, did you?
Your only chance, and it's a slim one, is to divert your attention towards the retailer... Comet.
Good luck.0 -

But what does the manufacturers warranty cover? If Sony claim the warranty doesn't cover the picture quality, unfortunately there's pretty much nothing you can do about it.
Had you rejected the TV on purchase, under the sale of goods act, you might have had a case. But as you've had it for so long you don't really have any recourse on that front.
Out of interest, is the picture quality particularly poor on normal TV? You say they had DVDs etc in the shops so couldn't see this. I assume then that the Scart, HDMI inputs are OK. If so, what about trying an external set-top box with an HDMI output to the TV?0 -

Because the op has been happy enough with the TV for the last 2yrs.
Now all of a sudden its so bad a full refund is being demanded. Ridiculous.0 -
Mountain of Debt yes we kept meaning to complain earlier esp as my sister had the same problem but never got around to it. After seeing the father in laws samsung which wasa cheaper we were very miffed that ours wasa so bad and the picture is very grainy and pixelated.
Apples - how RUDE! im not in need of any money at all thank you very much! and asked them if they would consider a replacement which they said they would have to consider. To instantly think that is so rude and assumptive! Im not some cheap blagger trying to get money out of people - for that i ACTUALLY have a job thank you very much! Im just very dissatisfied with this product. Yes I know we should have gotten on with it earlier but having to find another job filling in over 60 job applications and then having a baby diverted my attention somewhat! I have said they cn send someone round to fix it but they havent sent anyone...i just want to know where i stand and comments like yours quite frankly dont help!0
