What can I grow?

Unfortunately the recent heavy rain has killed off my pansies so I have 5 containers to fill.

I fancy filling them with fruit/veg but am pretty sure it's too late to grow most stuff. Is there anything edible I can start growing, in containers, at this late stage in the year?

    Loads of stuff

Lettuce, raddish, spring onions, turnips, dwarf beans, may get away with courgette if big container, beetroot should get away with, carrots, small parsnips

Just thought of a few more - spinach, chard - if they are big you could try overwintering stuff too - ie cabbages etc

No not at all - id go for something like "Autumn King" which is a main/late crop

You can get like a 1000 seeds for just a few pence - best to cover them in you can to be safe from carrot fly or keep the containers higher as they only reach so high

First floor balcony - high enough? Or does it need to be a certain height off the floor of the balcony, IYSWIM?

Yeah that should be plenty high - i think they only reach less than a metre

Good luck with it - home grown carrots are one of the nicest things to eat

Potatoes, ready in time for christmas, runner beans, :)
    Cross trainer fund- £21.
  • make sure any root crop you go for are early varieties. That has nothing to do with time of year and everything to do with the time it takes for a crop to mature; eg early spuds take about 10 weeks.
As for carrots, Autumn King are great but you can still go for a crop of Early Nantes.
