It's always a bit surprising that when there's an uproar about some section of society's pensions, noone bothers about MPs pensions - which are more generous than most of the pensions that people are complaining about!

a 40ths scheme is the most obscene vehicle possible, i agree.

Fred goodwin and the MPs have/had the same.quelle supris!

Mark Serwotka did not really need to say an awful lot: Francis Maude displayed ineptitude of the highest order by not knowing his brief. He clearly has not read Hutton properly, let alone digested or analysed it.

I wonder where the assertion that Mark Serwotka's pension is 'worth millions' has come from. Evidence, please.

I am a member of the PCS, and like every other PCS member I have spoken to, am absolutely delighted with Mark Serwotka's performance, today, yesterday and ever since his election and re-election as General Secretary.

none of this is about the facts! Defecit reduction and daily mail readers more likely.

If you read this frm the begining (and other threads on the same subject) we are all against gold plated MP pensions. So we have ben making a fuss, but you haven't heard.

But they will keep going (like the old expenses thing did) until enought like minded people step up and complain.

It would be nice for the tories and LIb Dems to lead the way in this regard. To show they are understanding this is the right track. I have a feeling (could be wrong) that in a tory only cabinet this would have been propsed already.

  • Maude was not impressive on Today.

And BTW why shouldn't Civil Servants wait another 8 years to get their gold-plated pensions - what's so special about them?

Maude has been found out at last for the creep he is.

Did Hutton say that Civil Servants receive gold-plated pensions? He is after all the "expert" on pensions.

    Quite.

They are also in the enviable position of being able to move the goalposts whenever they feel like it.

    Which they do. Regularly.

    No he didn't.

You suggest that he is an "expert" and the report made a number of recommendations. I am led to believe (from media coverage) that the Government is not suggesting going beyond the implimentation of these.

So, just out of interest, given the choice I made at 17, what would be more helpful to society (I was a very earnest girl back then)?

to spend 40 years as a nurse & retire on what is effectively half-pay (so still pay taxes, not eligible for any benefits)
or to have worked in the private sector (haven't a clue what skills I could have offered) and, apparently be less of a burden on the tax payer in retirement - either by having paid in more contributions, or taken a much lower pension?

You can all say what you like because it's a done deal!

Why did you say they have gold-plated pensions in your post then?

And why did the Government also move all public sector pension indexing from the RPI to the CPI? Does this not go beyond Hutton? I am led to believe that all the UK statistical expert advice is that the CPI is not a proper measure of pensioner inflation.

For the life of me, I can' t find anything in Hutton recommending this move. Surely the Government don't want public sector workers to pay more for their pensions, work longer for them and then lose between 15% and 25% of that pension over a lifetime if and when they eventually get it because the indexing does not stand up?

    Are they mad?

Everyone in the private sector had the opportunity to fight for their rights when this was happening to them. Instead they decided to bend over and take it up the ar5e, then thank their employers (many of whom fleeced their pension pots and wasted their employees contributions) for the experience.

You really do need to join the real world.
And good luck with your buy to rent property when you tell them to stick their increased pension contributions up their ar5e and stop paying any contributions towards a pension.
What sort of buy to let property are you going to get with your current 3, 5, or 7% contributions????? (reference your post number 251)

Unfortunately its hard to bring the country down when your union membership amounts to about 50 members. Some how I dont think UNITE the countries largest Union would take this on to national level for a small private company.
So yes we had no option but to bend over and take it up the Jacksy as you so kindly put it.
If we did take them on then our jobs would now be carried out by our Chinese brothers on the other side of the world.
Thus leaving us with no job and no pension instead of just a worst
pension. This is Private Sector reality unfortunately.

Life in the future for many of you Public Sector Workers is going to be a shock. This is just the beginning like I metioned in an earlier post. The current proposals put forward by the government will look like a walk in the park compared to what will be on offer in 20-30yrs time. It will be "you were lucky you had those cushy golden career average 1/60th or 1/80th Pensions, my £100,000 pot only pays me a paltry £3500 per annum.

Sorry I forgot, you will all have BTL properties!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
hope you manage to get some tennants, because money will be rather hard to come by for the have nots' with very small pension provision how will they ever afford the rent?????

WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD FROM ROYSTERER THE DAILY MAIL READING EXTREME RIGHT WING THATCHERITE.

I'll be getting invitations to join the KKK soon. I guess I would settle for that rather than being called a THATCHERITE you cruel people.

Haven't read the whole thing, but wondered if the OP was being ironic with use of "Wellcome" - the charitable trust dedicated to improvements in world health

    suspect not
