Can I insure 2 cars.

I own small car of my own that is insured in my sole name. I also drive my elderly father's most days as I care for my parents and use it to take them out and do their shopping etc. Their car is in my sister in law's name and insured in her name also as that is how it was set up I presume as my Dad is quite old. Dad's licence expired in April but he has not driven in over a year. The car is also used by my sister who lives abroad when she comes home to help care for them.
Yesterday my Mum said my brother had called and said they want me to insure it in my name as I am now the sole driver. Is it possible to insure 2 cars in my name and would I then need Dads car to be in my name also?

you can insure it in your name and it doesn't have to be in your name. Phone your insurance company and ask if they do multi car policies, if they do, see how much it'll cost but if they don't you can normally add a second car on for up to a month.. When i did that it wasn't too expensive and then when it came to renewal time i went with somebody who matched my NCD across the cars.

Bear in mind you cannot use your NCD across two seperate polciies.
Some companies may agree to mirror it, but you need to make sure this is agreed, not just use your NCD twice.

with you wanting to insure it i'd presume you'd be cancelling the sister in laws insurance? if not, why not just get added as a named driver to hers?

As he is the SOLE driver then he needs to be down as the MAIN driver.
This may or may not require a new policy.

I've just done my own insurance (with Sheilas wheels) and with then the policyholder has to be the main driver.
You cannot have a main driver as a named driver.

It is crucial that the main driver is noted correctly otherwise it's misrepresenting the risks to the insurer (I'm not implying anything deliberate here).

If you are the sole driver of both cars, sell one.
You can only drive one car at a time, take your parents out in your car.

The sister in law lives abroad but is insured on the car when she comes back, the OP has their own car so they won't be the sole driver. They'll be an occasional driver then they take their parents out and the sister in law will still need to be drive it when they come back.

oh and you can have a named driver as the main driver; it's one of the options when you go through confused.com
