My PC has fits of running slowly, sometimes a new screen takes ages to display - both as a web page or just opening a new application like Outlook or Word. From other postings on this board, I understand that there are some kind souls who can advise and require the following information:
Windows XP, sp3
RAM 512 MB
Commit charge total 768056 (varies)
Limit 1275612
Peak 770568
Link to HiJackThis pastebin com/3KUbmJDX
I have tried posting the log in situ, but get hauled up over the links. A suggestion was to use pastebin
Thanks in advance

There's a very good sticky at the top of this forum about speeding up slow computers.
Might be worth reading through that first, while someone comes along to go through your log.
:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

Any posts are my opinion and only that. Please read at your own risk.

do a full scan with tdsskiller and malwarebytes, fix anything found before closing.

uninstall zonealarm, rapport, soluto, microsoft security client, superantispyware, ashampoo winoptimizer, broadband test application, easylogin.

enable windows firewall and install avast 6 free, malwarebytes free, cleanmem, startuplite and ccleaner

that should get your commit charge down to well below installed ram, and the system will run much faster as a result.

reboot, note and post commit charge, and post a fresh log

You can just edit the http://www bit of the links out.

Links for all the software mentioned above are here

Thanks for your replies. I will now act on the advice given.

I run malwarebytes at intervals and there are no problems. ccleaner is run every time before I switch off.

Closed, can you tell me why you prefer avast to mse, please. It was through a posting on Motley Fool that I found your excellent guide to speeding things up and that board are in favour of mse. Are you also advocating that I just use the windows firewall instead of (free) Zonealarm?

its lighter, faster, better detection rates than mse, and is lighter on ram, which on older machines like yours is the primary reason for slowness. yes im advocating windows firewall for similar reasons - try it and see the difference, you can always go back.

I have followed your instructions, closed, and here are the latest figures.
I use messenger, so have left it in startuplite
Removing http:// and the www still gives rise to the complaint on links. Had to retype some to remove the 'link'

have you scanned with tdsskiller and malwarebytes?

Unless you need them running all the time, use the startup tab in msconfig to disable these items from running at startup (they can always be run manually if needed)

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MsnMsgr] "C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Messenger\MsnMsgr.Exe" /background
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [DWQueuedReporting] "C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\DW\dwtrig20.exe " -t (User 'SYSTEM')

Install and run ccleaner (untick the google toolbar during the install). Untick the "windows log files" box, under the system heading before cleaning. Also Tick the java cache tick box under CCleaner, applications, internet to wipe the java cache which sometimes hides infections. http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/slim

Install and run startuplite, accept suggested changes - http://www.malwarebytes.org/StartUpLite.exe

Disable ctfmon - control panel, regional and language options, languages, details, advanced, tick the Turn off advanced text services, ok

Click the java icon in control panel, advanced, misc - untick java quick starter, and untick place icon in task bar

Download and install cleanmem http://www.pcwintech.com/cleanmem (download direct download). In windows explorer, go to c:\windows\tasks, click on the clean system memory task, schedule, advanced, and change it from every 30 minutes to every 5 minutes, then ok, ok. Find c:\program files\cleanmem\mini_monitor, run it and right click the icon (near the clock) to set it to automatically run at startup, show percentage to keep an eye on your ram use. If your machine is still slow after doing everything listed, post your commit charge and installed physical ram details from task manager performance

In internet explorer, click on tools, internet options, advanced, disable script debugging to stop this running

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\MDM.EXE

If you haven't all ready done it, Install Malwarebytes and do a FULL (not quick) scan (after updating it), fix anything found before closing, otherwise you'll have to do it all over again. If anything was found reboot the machine before continuing. http://www.filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/

Unless you entered it or know this nameserver is trustworthy (ie your router), you may wish to delete it, as it is sometimes a sign of infection

    O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{CDA321A0-54E6-4220-BC8E-D040EDEC2C3E}: NameServer = 192.168.1.1

This is a list of (or remnants of) security software evident in your log, you may wish to uninstall these in Control Panel (add/remove programs or programs/features) to keep your PC running smoothly, too much overlapping or bloated security or useless tuning software can have a drastic effect on performance - always leave one resident scanner running (eg avast/avira etc)

Don't think I have had a rootkit infection. The last problem (about a 1yr ago) was some deep-seated trojan that prevented me accessing the internet (to find solutions) and I had to get daughter to sort me out over the phone!
Screen painting has got even slower - thought pc had died at 1 point. Maybe it was on a clean system memory?
I will plogh thro the rest of your suggestions in post 9.

Many thanks for taking the time and trouble to help.

what's your commit charge when screen painting gets slow, and what are you doing at the time? Is booting speed slow? Things should be getting better as your commit charge comes down.

What type of internet connection are you using?

do you update and do a full scan with malwarebytes?

Have you got your data backed up, what it the make and model of the pc, do you have xp reinstall disks?
