First Month in New House - What Bills to pay?

Hi there,

Move into our new home end of September and we know how much we need for the Mortgage and when that will come out but what bills do we pay on top? For example Water Rates, Council tax etc etc?
Or do we pay these the following month?
I dont want to miss something and then think arrgghhh didnt take that bill into consideration.
Any advice would be muchly appreciated!

Thanks

Electricity, gas, phone, any subscription services, if you set up a direct debit, will come out the next month. Water is paid in advance if it isn't on a meter, I don't know about if it isn't. Council Tax bill will arrive pretty quickly once you've spoken to them and that is in advance as well.

TV License in advance, even if you want to pay monthly I think you have to pay a certain lump of it upfront as well.

    Insurances - home and life.

My list of DDs just seems to grow and grow. I only seem to manage to take on more bills as I get older. I'm sure it used to be easy!

Your first month's mortgage payment can often be higher the first month as you pay one month in advance but often the remainder of the month before. So you might pay the last few days of September along with October's payment at the beginning of the month.

    Good luck, exciting!

BT were doing an offer where they give you BT Vision for £12.50 a month instead of the £130 connection fee.

Seeing as it was going to be one or the other, I opted for the BT Vision. I love it! It has iplayer, 4OD etc inbuilt so you can just watch whatever you want, whenever you want. We usually just live with a freeview plus box, I wouldn't choose a paid service really, but for near enough the same price over the year I do enjoy being able to watch back programmes that I might not have watched that people recommend after the event.

It depends how quickly you get round to notifying them all and setting up the direct debits and so on. You become liable for payment on the day that you move in so if you don't pay the first month's dd, all the rest of them will be higher to cover the cost of the first month. It could help with the budgeting though as the first mortgage payment is usually much higher.

I pay TV licence monthly- you have to pay double for the first 6 months until this year's licence is paid for. Then it goes down to the regular monthly amount as you start paying for next year's licence 6 months in advance. There is definitely some sort of scam involved in that financing arrangement!

Sorry to post in this thread, i really didn't want to start a new one, with what could be a set of daft questions.

Council Tax - I get the keys on the 22nd July, but I'm not planning on moving in for 2 weeks at least, possibly three. When do I have to start paying it? The house will be empty and unfinished until a couple of days before I move.

Gas and Electric - Both currently with British Gas (current owner), when I get the keys I ring them and provide them with meter reading and tell them I'm the new owner? Do i have to stay with British gas or can I shop around?

    Hmm daft questions :(

Hmmm...if it's only 3 weeks, you might not get any exemption, I was told they only work on full months. It's annoying, but how much are we talking here? Between £87 and £137?

Good lord no! Shop around just as soon as you are sorted out. I wont have anything to do with BG - ever, due to a previous experience with that wretched company so it's top of my list too when I move. Dont forget to forward your mail from your previous address and take a note of every letter that comes in, dont forget to inform the catalogues to change your address since they have a nasty habit of sending out applications for cards and stuff that could be misused. Basically, you are responsible for all bills from the day you complete but be aware that from the day of EXCHANGE you must have building insurance for the property - it's a condition of the mortgage so I cant believe that other banks have it differently.

    There isn't normally a £130 charge if there's already a working line.
