It's NOT a load of old COBBLERS ! ::
On Friday, customers who ask for one of the 'Big 5' species of fish - cod, haddock, tuna, salmon and prawns - from Sainbsurys fish counters will be offered a free portion of hake, pouting, megrim, coley, rainbow trout, or mackerel .
I'd be happy if it was load of POLLOCKS :rotfl:
and if anyone is "concerned" about MEGRIM .....
...it is a flat fish from the brill and turbot family and is found in European seas

river cobber is awfull yuck will never buy that stuff again and i am one of those people who wipll give anything a try0

I like river cobbler as it's great for fish curries. But I agree that it's not very sustainable in terms of it's airmiles, although it is sustainable in terms of it's use as an alternative to depleted species (I believe it is also a very efficient fish to farm as it prolifically reproduces and grows very quickly).
There's been a lot of scare-mongering about river cobbler.0 -
nah mate, people aren't necessarily scared of it, the whole of the planet's oceans are polluted with heavy metals and other nasties anyway - but there's a lot nicer fish out there than a rubbery, old catfish... and if my fish collected airmiles then great, maybe i'd be eating lots of alaskan pollock and south east asian fish (i'm saving up for a holiday), but as it doesn't, i prefer mine to be fresh and from closer to home, tends to taste better that way........0

http://mattsteinglass.wordpress.com/2008/05/19/thou-blackguard-thou-slanderest-my-fish/ Rather interesting article.
I agree as regards tastier fish, but I find when cooking a curry you need a fish like river cobbler (mild flavour, good firm texture). I wouldn't use it for anything else.0 -
I don't think I've ever heard of river cobbler, but then reading through this thread it's clear I have very limited fish experience! A trip to the fish counter is in order!0

the problem with river cobbler is that it's travelled half way around the world to get here... isn't this whole free alternative fish deal part of the campaign to get people eating more readily available and sustainable fish?
personally, i think river cobbler, basa, panga or whatever other guise it is sold under, tastes of nothing much, and has a revolting consitency so would say avoid it because it's yuckypoo
just had a look on wikipedia to find what other names this fish goes by... how about this one "Asian Sewer Catfish" ! :eek:
Just in case anyone thought floart was joking about asian sewer catfish (I did)
here is thetext from wikipedia
The basa fish, Pangasius bocourti, is a type of catfish in the family Pangasiidae. Basa are native to the Mekong River Delta in Vietnam and Chao Phraya basin in Thailand.[1] These fish are important food fish with an international market. They are often labeled in North America and Australia as basa fish or Asian Sewer Catfish.[2] In the UK, the species is known mainly as river cobbler,[3] with basa also being used on occasion. In Europe, these fish are commonly marketed as pangassius or panga.[4] Other related shark catfish may occasionally be falsely labeled as basa fish, including Pangasius hypophthalmus (iridescent shark) and Pangasius pangasius (yellowtail catfish0 -
Just got back from Sainsburys. We bought 2 portions of trout (not the £1.50 a portion ones, the ones sold by weight which they had reduced to £6-ish a kilo) for £1.38 for the two and got 2 portions of Hake @ £1.50 each, for free.
It seems to be the £1.50 portions of fish which are free, so if you can find any fish selling for less than that a portion you make the best saving.0
