Ikea credit card charge

Ikea charged 70p yesterday for making a purchase on my credit card.

I understand shops are charged by the card companies and would like to claim this back but 70p on a £14 spend is excessive.

I asked for a refund and wanted to re-purchase the items on my debit card but they wouldn't allow it, I would have had to go right the way through the store again.

Why should I, paying cash, subsidise people who pay by CC.

I don't think this can be described as a rip off as the store I visit has had large signs displayed for months explaining their policy. So it is your decision when you reach the till if you still want to pay by credit card.

70p on £14 though, that is 5% and a bit excessive as I should imagine Ikea is only paying something like 2% to the cc company.Travel agents always charge about 2% which(although not fair) is reasonable.Mind you that's why i always use a debit card instead.
At the end of the day though it is our choice.

As a big retailer with a lot of negotiating power they will be paying around 0.5%

Didnt they inform you before hand of the excess charge? Some shops do have charges or wont accept cc at all, but as long as they inform customers of this, its your choice.

No longer a user, goodbye folks. PLEASE delete my account. Thank you
  • But, isn't it 70pence, flat rate, no matter how much your bill is? So while it is 5% of £14, it's a lot less if you're buying some furniture for a few hundred?
i know from experience that you can soon rack up a heft bill after a trip round those showrooms?!! :-)

We purchased 2 sofas from Ikea a couple of weeks ago and were aware of the charge so we took the money in cash to avoid paying this charge. However, we needed to have the goods delivered and went to the place to arrange this. The cost was £35 and we went to pay on our delta card but they charged us 70p for this also. I thought that Delta was like writing a cheque and we queried this but they still insisted on charging us the fee.

Talon is right, it is a flat rate regardless of amount of bill. This is not so bad if you're spending a lot, but obviously not so good with a small amount.

I visit the Edinburgh branch of Ikea any time I'm down that way and I have always been told about the charge before paying so I then have the option of carrying on or using alternative means to pay.

Sometimes I wish they would apply a £50 entrance fee...........maybe then I would not be so keen to visit! Lol! ;)

  • We pay a flat rate for debit cards, about 30p and 3% on credit. We prefer to absorb this and we make nothing like the profit Ikea do.

personally i think it's an attempt by IKEA to make themselves sound better (and their prices SEEM cheaper, but customers assuming they must be because IKEA don't absorb the charge) and the CC companies sound like evil meglomaniacs....which of course they are!
