Deterring People From Hanging Round my Door?

The only entrance to our is on a secluded alleyway and up some steps (which only access my house, no one elses), the steps are very sheltered with a wall on either side, at the top there is a small area where we keep our bins, and our door. We often have people hanging round on the steps or by our door, mostly drunken and fairly innocent, but a couple of other times I'm not so sure. I've just heard a load of kerfuffle and realised there were two men outside the door, I suspect they were up to no good. I knocked on the window and they said "oh, sh*t" and ran off. Also used to have a couple of homeless alcoholics who would regularly sit on the steps, which always made me uncomfortable when I was going out. So anyway, I really want to make the area much less approachable and inviting in the hope we will get less people hanging around.

I am seriously thinking of getting one of those lights that goes on when it senses movement (anyone recommend a good one?), and possibly a security camera?

Can anyone recommend anything else I could/should do please?

No seriously I think the camera and lights are a good idea.
Is there anywhere you can put a gate?
Find out who you are and do that on purpose (thanks to Owain Wyn Jones quoting Dolly Parton)

There was a device invented a while back that gave off a buzzing noise to deter loiterers - can anybody remember it?

Aye but the old drunks won't notice it. The range is such that only youngsters can hear it.

You could play classical music. That quite often has been known to get rid of teenagers.

Just so long as I don't want much.

I would suggest the motion sensor light as a definate, no dodgy dealings should happen in the light.
Maybe you could rig up the steps like in the home alone films :rotfl:

I would get the motion sensor light, they are really bright and I always feel safer when I approach the house and the light comes on -no fumbling for keys in the dark
