Hiring a car from abroad for the UK

My friend is visiting the UK from New Zealand in the summer - anyone know if it's better/cheaper to hire a car from there or wait until he gets to the UK?

Why not get some quotes and find out?
Using a broker in your own country is often cheaper than booking direct with the hire car company. Whether such brokers exist in NZ I don't know - they certainly do in Oz0 -
Look on the comparison websites in the UK - determine the cheapest then look on this site for any vouchers or links. Also make sure you look at all the alternatives EG sometimes Avis.com are cheaper than Avis.co.uk. Always cheaper if you rent from and return to same office.0
