Thanks for your comments - he had thought about magnetic ones to start with, but decided against them. Thanks crossleydd42 for the link, its worth thinking about the diy option.

I wouldnt go for the DIY option the vinyl signs can bubble very easily if not applied properly and split if water builds up behind them. Get a few quotes from local businesses they may not be as expensive as you think.

As for being broken in to, it didnt make a difference, I got van vault locks on both the side and back to stop this.

I should also say that someone else advertises on my van and I get paid for it so it must be worthwile, although I do do a lot of miles. I always recognise peoples signs, one company imparticular has a very rude abbreviation and it always makes me smile although I wouldnt go down that route personally

Hi Would like some feedback/advice: My husband has been a self employed builder for a year now and at the moment drives a white van. He is thinking of getting it sign written with his name, phone nos and basically what sort of work he does etc, Does this sort of advertising work? - do you take the name and no from the side of a van? and if you work in a similar trade does this bring you in more work?
    Thanks in anticipation!

Massive returns on investment should be your first move when setting up.

The main problem with individual vinyl letters is the paintwork underneath sun-fades differently, so even when the letters are removed there is still a 'shadow', and that affects the resale value of the van.

A lot of organisations now have moved to full-body vinyl wrapping, which avoids this problem.

One handyman's comments on van signwriting are here: uk.d-i-y and on advertising are here: uk.d-i-y

Also I think phone numbers are hard to remember and a domain name is easier to remember, and it should be self-explanatory and form the sign itself eg a domain name 2' high fittedwardrobes.co.uk or something catchy is a lot better than A & J Smith & Sons (Isle of Wight) Ltd, all types of joinery work, tel (01234) 123456, * fitted wardrobes * kitchen cabinets * www.aandjsmithandsonesltd

Mr Bezos probably wouldn't have done so well with J P Bezos (Booksellers) Ltd as he has with Amazon.com

All our vans are sign written . Cost is now £120 inc Vat .
We have had loads of response from people who say I have 'seen your vans around'
I think its the best investment when it comes to advertising. It shows you are a profesional business and have nothing to hide.
It also makes the staff think twice before cutting someone up or making rude hand gestures when driving!

Hi, my son works for a joinery firm, who took the firms van back last year, forcing him to buy his own transport. He tried to use his car, but found it too small, and bought a Movano in white. he's been moved to a site and told he has to get it permanently signed with the company logo, or is not allowed on site. It is his own personal van, and everyone I talk to says it's wrong. The firm is paying for the signage, but I'm worried his premiums will go up, and it'll be more of a target for thieves .Any help?

you can upload your own sign design logo or image for nothing (or not much if you arent a regular customer!), and they print it on a sign magnet you attatch to car.
Beware tho, if you live in scotland where it rains alot, and dont take it off or regularly move its position, it bubbles paintwork after a year or so!
You could get the magnets done cheap, to the company spec if they mail him the design and logo, he can use it when on site working, remove when off duty and not ruin his van if he moves on to a new job.
Not sure any company can demand you get your own vehicle sign written, but it would perhaps be a compromise!

It is fairly common now, I think because site security needs to keep a track of vans entering and leaving sites due to various light fingered gangs looking for materials they can remove and sell on.

I am not sure magnetics would suffice, check with the site first before spending money, as they are so easily changed. Actually, the "travelling community" in these parts are known to have their vans properly signwritten and then completely changed every month or two to give them a new false identity.

Personally, I don't like magnetics much (although I do supply them occasionally), a lot of the cheap ones are not the best quality and, if they are not proper vehicle grade, they will fall off. Easily removed by youngsters having a lark too.

You also have problems of them picking up bits of grit when off the vehicle and then scratching the paintwork when aligning them on the van, not to mention baking onto the paint if left for long periods in the summer heat.

I want to get a van wrapped, I am pretty sure that the advert will get me work and it is a very cheap form of advertising when you think how many people see it and how long you have it.
I am a football coach, so unlike the builders I would not think people will be breaking in to steal balls and bibs, so that is my question to you, do you think that having a van with football coaching advertised all over it, would increase the chances of thieves wanting to break in?
