Help needed - mobile phone insurance

My mobile phone has fallen out of my pocket at some stage today. I have contacted my service provider and cancelled the sim and phone, and I have until tomorrow to contact my insurance company to advise them of the loss.

I was reading my policy and there's a very ambiguous exclusion:

We will not cover any damage, loss or theft where you have not taken reasonable precautions to prevent this.

Technically speaking, one could say that wearing a pair of jeans with deeper pockets would be a reasonable precaution to prevent it.

I just don't want the insurance company to stitch me up as I've heard a few horror stories about this. Anybody any experience with this?

I would suggest telling the truth!

In my experience if you say that you last had the phone at 'such and such a time' and when you looked a while later the phone was gone then the claim would be accepted. Just say you genuinely have no idea what happened to it.

Not taking reasonable precautions means (IMO) leaving the phone on a table and walking off, not zipping up a handbag or leaving it on view in the car.

From my experience if they do say your claim is not valid, (as is likely as they seem to try to get out of any payments), write a letter to them, copy with email, state that you have taken every reasonable precaution. Also say you will take the matter further to the Financial Ombudsman if they do not pay out as you have acted in good faith.

We've just been through this, though it was a robbery, they said they wouldn't pay as it hadn't been reported in time (48 hours), the phone hadn't been registered with them and they hadn't been informed it was an Iphone.

After threat of legal action they sent a replacement. It has taken a couple of months, but don't give up!

    Good luck.
