Insurance for 19 year old male.

Im having a bit of trouble finding insurance, Ive been quoted £5000 by elephant, adrian flux, directline and aviva for a 1.2 VW Polo on gocompare etc...
The cheapest Ive got it to is £3652.09 with Quinn Direct, Fully Comp. My mate who passed the same time as me got insured on a 1.25 Ford Fiesta, Fully Comp for £2000 (Forgot who he said it was with).
How do insurance companies expect young boys to come up with this amount of money?
I understand insurance is going to be high for a 19 year old but come on £5000? Please can someone provide some insurance brokers or companies that are reasonable?

try changing your choice of car, just because it's a 1.2 doesn't mean it'll be cheap to insure. A cheaper car to insure is the least desirable one for people wanting to modify the hell out of it and then donut round Asda car park. If you buy a high risk car it doesn't matter what the engine size is and that goes the opposite way; if you buy a low risk car you can get one with a bigger engine and pay less insurance.
People your age don't normally drive things like Volvo's, 4x4's, Rovers etc etc so you've a better chance of getting a realistic quote.

my son got reasonable insurance from churchill last year he was your age, this year churchill were sky high(because of an open claim they quoted £4600 this year) he has just insured with cis today for more than half that, other friends and family also have gone with cis, its down to were you live, work, amongst other things, you can try adding an older driver with good driving history with some companies to bring the price down sometimes. we tried lots insurers this afternoon including the ones for high risk drivers the quotes were through the roof

Thanks, I thought VW would of been a low risk car and corsas and clios etc are more of a boy racer car? Do you think ill get a better quote than Quinn direct?

Hi Chelsea - if you're doing limited miles try the Pay As You Drive companies - Coverbox, Insure the Box, i-kube. Also specialist brokers - Only Young Drivers, A Plan and Crowthorne. Best of luck

My brothers first car was a Volvo Estate and he got insured for half of what the OP's quote is.

As the person a few posts up as said, if you go for a 'young boys' car it doesn't matter how much of an old banger it is it will cost you.

As bad as it sounds consider an old mans car.

    Hi,

It used to be that hatches were considered a "sporty" option, regardless of engine size etc. For example a few years back a friend of mine found out he could insure a 1.8 Saloon varient for less than the 1.6 Hatch varient, even though the Saloon had a larger engine, better equipment etc.

The key thing in the thinking behind such high policy prices for young drivers is that you're insuring what you might hit! I.e. a 1.0 Micra hitting a new £50k Merc is still gonna cause some damage.

The usual tricks of putting mum/dad/another experienced driver on the policy can help. I was originally on my dads insurance as a named driver of my own car - though he used it far more than me!

I think it's getting worse, it's basically the insurance companies saying they don't want your business unfortunately, unless you're minted of course. I still remember paying over £1,600 for car insurance when I was younger - I made the switch from a "sensible" 1.6 Saloon to 1.6 "Sporty" hatch that was likely slower than the saloon, yet it cost a lot more.

Best of luck to you. I think there's a need for a "young drivers" insurance guide if there's not one already!

    Cheers,

    FF.

How do insurance companies expect young boys to come up with this amount of money?

    They don't care, quite frankly.

If anything the claims history on these kind of cars would mean this is acting as a deterrent for young boys - it is madness to pay all this money for insurance, unless loaded with dosh.

You could probably buy a handful of old cars and the penalty for no insurance for that amount of money.
