So how many days are you intending to take to drive the 2500 miles ? 6, 7, 8 ? What ever your intended timing, you are going to be spending an absolutely massive proportion of your valuable holiday time in a car.

Horses for courses and all that, but I'd strongly suggest that you relook at your planned itinerary.

p.s what is the one way rental surcharge for a trip like that ?

We have at least 11 days in plan to do the whole drive - and it really isn't a chore - we both enjoy the driving, and it will be a good laugh along the way. WE plan on doing 220 - 250 miles a day, which shouldn't be too arduous at all

as for the one way drop off that $500 so about £310. which isnt bad between the two of us really.

    So just an update:
    Things to do in NY
    Top of the Rock
Statue of Liberty (pos the free Staten Island Ferry ride)
    Walk the High Line

    Things to do in Chicago
We are off to see the Cubs play the Rockies which should be fun
    Going up the Willis Tower
Go on the Architect and River tour

then it looks like we will be stopping in:
    Springfield
    Rolla
    Miami (not THE miami sadly)
    Oklahoma
    Amarillo
    Albuquerque
    Farmington
    Monument valley
    Grand Canyon

then the Wynn hotel in Vegas for a few nights, and then on to Santa Monica for the last few days on the beach

    hello highhorse
you might be cutting it a bit fine if you want to explore Las Vegas, as well as doing the other things.
If you were sticking to the Interstates, the 220-250 miles per day wouldn't be arduous at all (even thought it would be tedious and boring), but you aren't ! You're going to be driving along a real mixture of roads and your average speed, along some sections is going to come well down (especially if/when you travel through any urban areas) - but once your rural again, you'll be chugging along quite nicely.
I hope that you and your mate have a wonderful break and that it is everything that you want it to be , and expect it to be

p..s have you CONFIRMED the one way hire charge ?

Hope you have a great trip, don't forget to stop in Seligman, one of those iconic Rt66 towns, Angel's Barber Shop is fascinating

Lots of great Rt66 info here

Come back and let us know how it went :)

    hello horsey
now you've really got me confused.
    From a 14 day holiday,
you're going to spend 11 days travelling 2500 miles in a car
spend several days in New York
be in Chicago for 1/2 days
stopping for 9 nights en -route
Las Vegas for a few nights
Santa Monica for few days on beach.
Which doesn't seem to fit into a 14 day schedule.

  • Dont EVER pay to rent a car in the US
Contact one of the car delivery services like http://www.gonomad.com/transports/0012/javins_driveaway.html

Where you get a car and a tank of fuel ! for free for delivering the car.

Take a look on Google, then do a search for your route and youll find some company that wants one delivered.
I did one about 10 years back from New York to Dallas. It was a new Jaguar and the recipient was so chuffed his car was delivered by a Brit.

Only problem with these deliveries is you dont get a big amount of time for delivery, but you can sometime contact the person youre delivering to and do a deal

That is possibly the most ill advised piece of advice that I've ever read on MSE
