Shadow chancellor Ed Balls is to call for a temporary emergency tax cut to stimulate the economy and boost consumer confidence.

He will say acting now to counter the slowdown is a better option than "ploughing on and hoping for the best".

He will also warn that months or years of slow growth could leave "a permanent dent in our nation's prosperity".

The Conservatives said Mr Balls had not come up with a "credible alternative" for tackling the deficit.

I'm not sure a tax cut would go down to well with the rating agencies!

I didn't realise they were running our country now, I hope they are better at it than when they were assessing banking sector risks

    Really?

I'm quite well off but have been paying VAT for years - where do I apply for my rebate?

I'm not sure I follow your response to what I said?

You didn't realise who is running our country? The ratings agencies? I never hinted they were did I?

Ed Balls is arguing for a "balanced" approach to an unbalanced budget.

On the basis they didn't "warn" us with their foresight then why should their opinion rule what the Government do now...
