Reading this thread reminded me of a particular quote from a reddit thread I browsed the other day concerning social norms that are stupid:
"The fact it's considered rude to correct someone (even politely), but it's not considered rude to endlessly inject uneducated, unsupported and even provably wrong opinions into our shared discourse in the first place.It's like !!!!!ing not when someone !!!!!! in the pool, but when someone scoops it out. And worse, it's magic !!!! that - if it gets anywhere near them - makes other people more likely to !!!! in the pool themselves in the future.
Continue that for long enough, and sooner or later the entire pool's more !!!! than water... and yet we unthinkingly defend the thoughtlessly incontinent, and instead usually !!!!! out the people doing the dirty, thankless job of trying to keep the pool clean in spite of them."0 -
