Reading this thread reminded me of a particular quote from a reddit thread I browsed the other day concerning social norms that are stupid:

"The fact it's considered rude to correct someone (even politely), but it's not considered rude to endlessly inject uneducated, unsupported and even provably wrong opinions into our shared discourse in the first place.It's like !!!!!ing not when someone !!!!!! in the pool, but when someone scoops it out.
