Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker Car Insurance Carver! Xmas Saver!
The other thing is to keep you card 100% usable you need to format the card once your pictures are saved on your PC (or at least fairly regularly). Just deleting them off the card (or camera) leaves a trace on the card which will soon become U/S.

sorry to hijack the thread, but thanks for this info. is that why if i get the pictures myself from the card (though my computer, camera, card...) not the auto download, it shows other now empty folders?
Relax, Breathe, Love 2014 Challenges:Cross Stitch Cafe Challenger 23. Frugal Living Challenger. No buying cleaning products. I used MSE advice to reduce my car insurance from 550 to 325!! & paid it off in full!!!

Not sure I understand the logic of that!

SD/SDHC cards are notorious for filling up with carp. Think of it as a drive on your PC, when you delete/transfer pictures all you are doing is removing the pointer to the file on the card, not the file. Just like a drive, eventually it has to be defragged or reformatted.

The easiest way to do this is to reformat the card in camera. This way you know that the card will be at its full capacity ready to store new pictures and the camera can read/write to it.

Absolutely. I have two SDHC cards I use regularly. When one fills up, I swap it for the other and then format in camera. The one removed I just copy the pictures off that I want to keep, then I know it's ready to be reformatted in the camera when needed.

I'm not sure I'm entirely convinced. If the pointer is removed then the fact that the file data is still on the card doesn't matter surely? Isn't that part of the card then regarded as empty and so available for new data?

    Re Format SD cards.

Have a look here. Also there are many causes of SD card corruption

For me the best option is to use an SD card recommended by the camera manufacturer and regularly doing an in-camera format.

If you use the default settings in SDFormatter it'll do a quick format and simply rewrite the file allocation table, leving the data on the card so i'm not convinced either.

Thanks. A quick Google seems to find opinion on this divided into two rather polarized camps!

I've yet to suffer a corrupt SD card (or any noticeable loss of speed) despite extensive use and no reformatting or defragging, so I'll stick with that for now.
