The Highways Agency website has up to the minute traffic information:
http://www.highways.gov.uk/traffic/traffic.aspx
Not always much use when you're on the road though! So, they also have a local rate Information Line:
08457 50 40 30
From HA Website:
"HAIL is our own telephone information service. You can talk to a HAIL advisor to get help and information about our network, including:- Current travel conditions along your route, including the effect of incidents such as accidents or breakdowns.
- What conditions are likely to be on your route when you intend to travel.
- The locations and progress of roadworks that might affect your journey.
"We recognise that you need to be able to contact us at any time so we have increased HAIL opening times to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year."
Good Luck!

Sharpen your elbows to get on the train or bring a brolly, sharp briefcase etc, otherwise you will be doing a sardine impression. Try not to let fridays traffic put you off too much, its fairly bad normally but last friday was chaotic0

I've been looking at the map.
I'd be tempted to go East over the peaks and then up using any combination of devious A and B roads.Happy chappy0 -

Yes - it's nice scenery and some good pub lunches. But not a practical proposition when facing a deadline for a meeting. If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -
Why not? I use devious routes for most of my journeys. The OP said it took 2.5 hours on a congested motorway, so by careful route choice and a bit of research it might be possible to find a longer but quicker route.
By going along the big A road that goes round the bottom of the peaks and then up the M1 it might be quicker. Needs a bit of trialling.
The other option is to travel off peak by starting earlier.Happy chappy0 -
I hate the M62 too, I can use the road through Todmorden and Halifax instead and although they can be busy too it's not quite as soul destroying as the M62.0

Best route over the Peaks/moors would probably be:
A534 to Congleton
A54 (and a bit of A53) to Buxton
A6 through Dove Holes
A624 to Glossop (via Hayfield)
B6105 (straight across the x-roads) to Crowden
then two different options
A6024 downhill to Holmfirth, then continue to Honley
A616 into Huddersfield town centre
A62 Leeds rd/A644 to Brighouse
pick up the usual M62/M621 route to Leeds
Given time is 2hr 20min
If you know the west yorks section of M62 is busy I would:
from Crowden, take the A628 over Woodhead
which takes you to the M1 at Barnsley
go up M1/M621 to Leeds0
