David Lloyds Joint Membership

Firstly, I apologise if I have posted this in the wrong section. I'm really looking for some advise of where I stand in regards to a new David Lloyds membership. I was not given a copy of the contract so unable to refer to them.

Myself and the Mrs (Jo) decided to join David Lloyds 2-3 weeks ago. I have been once and Jo has yet to go and use any facilities. This afternoon she admitted that she was now not keen to use the gym and didn't want the membership. I went alone when I signed up and opened up a joint membership and also put my little boy on the member ship too.. It was £65 each for us and £7.50 for the little one.

I phoned David Lloyds and asked where we stood because Jo hasn't actually signed any contract. I did not sign on her behalf. David Lloyds defence is that I am the main and lead account holder and therefore they don't need her signature.

Now I agree to a certain extent that we've entered in a contract but it seems a shame for all that money to go to waste. I asked while on the phone whether it was possible to transfer the membership to my brother but keep the direct debit continuing. They said memberships were non-transferable and there's nothing they could do. It all seems very harsh because she hasn't used any of their facilities what so ever.

Is there anything at all we can do.. Or are we stuck paying for 12 months now? Please don't state the obvious that we should have read the terms and you've entered into a contract so it's my own fault. I'm aware of that already.

Mike

A quick search on gym memberships will show you that these memberships are difficult to cancel or change - but you "might" spot some help in one of them. Click on the link below and have a browse...

I did have a little look before posting the thread to see if anyone had been in a similar situation but couldn't see anything. I'll have another look.

Couldn't see anything. Can anyone offer any advice? Is it worth me going in to see the membership manager.

To be honest, the amount of time you'll spend trying to fight this really isn't worth it (as legally you have no leg to stand on, and David Lloyd are unlikely to shift), so I'd put your cancellation in writing NOW (for 12 months time, and make sure they acknowledge it!), and make the most of the facilities until the 12 months expires.

Why not try and base all your family activities around visits?

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • That's pretty bad!!! Strangely enough their cancellation period on my contract (joint account with husband) is only 3 months. Have checked with other pals and people in the office and effectively all of us were told 3 months.

Whatever yo do, don't give up!!! If you need me I can gather some signatures offering support for you to have the right to stop your membership if you haven't had it for no more than 28 days.

    All the best.
