electric off peak combi boiler vs oil

I currently have a Heatrae Sadia amptec wet electric central heating system which gives instant heat but at whatever the tariff is (normal about £300pm in winter). My hot water is supplied by an electric immersion heater that seems on the whole to be very good.
I have been told I can not have mains gas and only have LPG in canistor's rather than a tank which leaves me concerned of being stuck with one supplier.
I was looking at installing Oil but am concerned by the whole installation fee and all the bad press about how expensive this is becoming. I have seen online electric E10 combi and theramflow combi boilers that heat the water during off peak and store enough to heat house all day(is this true). Has any one got one of these and also can some one advise me should I go oil or take one of these electric boilers?

Please help baby on way and at moment am scared of this winters bills

Not true. The thermaflow boiler will store some heat and maybe keep the house warm for an hour or 2 before you need to turn it back on. Its certainly a better unit than what you have just now but you can expect to pay upwards of £3000 to have on installed.

An Oil system will cost more to install by the time you pay for a decent size tank the boiler and all the ancillary equipment.

I reckon that the oil works out a bit cheaper than the electricity but it depends how much electricity you have to pay for at the higher rate. Also who knows whats going to happen with the oil prices next winter
  • Sorry to dampen your spirit but we have had one very long ten month nightmare with the wet electrical central heating we have. It was installed four years ago after an advert in our local paper saying that to reduce heating costs this was the heating to install.
We got a quote and with all the figures of how little it would cost to run, we got it installed. All went well for three years until our utilities company shocked us last year around September with a huge bill.
For less than a years heating between July 2010 and March 2011 its cost us almost £3000. (and that is with heating on two hours in the morning, and roughly two hours immersor heating. Then an hour at night before bedtome. This is not normal usage even!!) Speaking to a utility customer relations person this evening we have come to the conclusion our heating system is now defunct as we cannot afford to use it for they (as we have ) have calculated for 'NORMAL' usage over one month it would cost us £400. Now that is £4800 per year!!!! How we are going to get through this coming winter we do not know.
Our utility provider do not have Economy 10. Amptec flow boilers come in different wattages .So calculations are for a 9w £1.00 per hour 12w will be £1.20 and 14w £1.40 per hour if we take an average 10p for a unit of electricity. These are not my figures but our providers who have been calculating it for us.
My husband and I are totally sunk with this. We are both unemployed and have no way of paying the sort of costs it has run up. Our advice to anyone who is considering going for an AMPTEC flow boiler....... BEWARE. The chose is yours, but we have discovered it to be the most expensive form of heating and to be quite honest I would love to hear from anyone who has had similar experiences.
Even when we thought storage heaters were expensive they were blessings compared to this!
