I would highly recommend Second Life as mentioned above. It's not a game as such but more of a world where you can meet new people, listen to live streamed music, goto the movies and a whole lot more.
On the price side it doesn't have to cost you a penny, your first basic account is completely free forever, you only have to pay if you want to buy land to build a house.
With the first basic account you can do everything that everyone else can do, you can buy/sell items, build items to sell, stream your bands latest song if you know how.
I will give a small word of warning though, Second Life is for 18's and over so the content in some area's can be of a graphic nature!!
I have been in world for about 4 days now and am completely hooked, be warned it will very quickly take over your life!
If you are interested check out https://www.secondlife.com for more info and PC requirements."Gort, klaatu barada nikto"

An operating system is a platform.0 -
An Operating System is not a platform, it is simply the software that makes your computer hardware usable. If you install Linux on an Xbox, it does not become a different platform.0

Sorry if I got the pricing wrong, but WoW was once £15 a month, haven't played it in a long time though so that's probably why I got the price wrong.
I'm currently running the game on Windows XP, but don't know if it'll run on other desktops, best way to find out is either check their website or try installing it.
Also as I stated in my first post, the game is still in Beta testing. This means that not all the functionality is yet open and there will be more quests and other exciting things coming into the game in the future.0 -
Also try this free MMORPG http://www.silkroadonline.net/
personally i'd suggest playing World of Warcraft but keep your eyes open for http://www.warhammeronline.com/ , its been in creation for 8 years and the graphics and gameplay look stunning.0 -
There are a lot of free MMORPG's out there, but in all honesty you do get what you pay for. In most cases, you can pay for extras in the games... And in the end, those who do pay for extras get so many benefits (like better weapons etc) that it is just pointless for those who don't have extras.
Its like that in Secondlife... if you don't put money in, its just not as good.~Diminutive0 -
