Let us know when you find an insurance company that doesn't charge an admin fee when you cancel. It's pretty standard industry practice for home and car insurance. This is what happens when a mature market becomes price driven, the headline price is reduced as far as possible, but anything out of the norm costs. They drive the price down by automating as far as possible, but a cancellation requires manual (i.e a person) intervention, hence the charge.

If you don't cancel there's no charge, and I'm not sure why you would take out insurance with the intention of cancelling anyway.

What rubbish, do you work for Churchill?

None of my previous insurers have had such a fee.

How can it cost £55 for a process which takes less than 5 minutes.

The cost of cancelling should be free. And under distance selling regulations it is.

How anyone can defend the practise is beyond me.

Insurance/financial services aren't within the scope of the DSRs.

Only if you stop reading at 'paid' or don't understand what 'less' means.

Still don't understand why you thought cancelling now was a good idea.

Because I have to pay a fee when I cancel the policy which is unacceptable so I cancelled it as I have a 14 day cooling off period so they can stuff their policy.

I don't like buying from companies which use such underhand rip off methods

But you have to pay it within the 14 day period too!

Ok, I'll keep defending insurers, and I'll let you pay the £55.

They've already got all 5900 of your pennies. It's what you'll get back that's your problem. But sure you'll get VERY ANGRY at them on the phone too.

This has to be a wind up surely? I cannot see why you would cancel a policy just because there was a cancellation fee?

He/She can cancel a policy when and whenever He/She wants to and for whatever reason He/She wants to.
They can indeed, and they will be bound by the T&Cs they agreed to, including a cancellation fee, unless they're deemed unfair.

    Take them to court.
Courts tend to rule on contracted terms, not what dawny1 thinks.
