Marriage's Manitoba is a bit of a bargain at £10.99 in Costco. It's double that on Amazon. Cheap bread flour may be ok for everyday but can't compare with top-quality from the likes of Marriage's. Price really isn't everything, certainly not with flour, but of course it doesn't make sense to buy more than you can use in a few months. Use-by date on Marriage's Manitoba in Costco Reading yesterday was Feb 2012.Do Costco still sell this flour and at what price?0 -
It's gone up to £11.99 a bag now. I still buy it because it makes such nice bread and the size is OK for me, but I wish it were cheaper0

It was £11.99 today at the Milton Keynes Costco - I was interested as I make bread for a few people every week, and use either Lidl or Aldi white bread flour, (usually around 59p/1.5 kg) both of which make fantastic hand made bread, but the flour has ascorbic acid (vitamin c) added, which although obviously not harmful to anyone, is an additive that the more expensive (and therefore presumably better quality) flours don't have/need, and The Real Bread Campaign doesn't like it either! Tesco, Waitrose & Asda own brand all have ascorbic acid added, I think. It's gone up to £11.99 a bag now. The Marrage's Manitoba flour is high protein (13.7%) compared to Lidl/Aldi at around 11.5%, but I suspect that's because it's Canadian & therefore top notch. I will try a bag, but 16 kg will last me a while...:D0 -
I bought a bag about 3 weeks ago from Leeds and it was still £10.99 (Edit: was in Costco Leeds today and the price was £11.99)
The supermarket own brand flour does not compare to this stuff. I've been using it for about two years now and noticed I do not need to use as much flour for a 2 pound loaf as the 'cheap' bread flour, so when I factor in 10% less flour, the cost per loaf is about the same or just slightly over what it would using cheaper flour but with a much nicer taste and texture.0
