Hi all

One of my neighbours has managed to get Sky multiroom free for a short while and it should be up and running this week.

Now for the question, when the multiroom freebie does end, is it possible to still run the two boxes with two separate cards in them without paying Sky the multiroom fee?

If so, how would they do it?

  • No unfortunately now, Sky have this pretty nailed down these days.

I know there are devices you can buy which means you can share one bo with 2 TV's, but you can only watch the same channel on both if that makes sense!

Sky will usually do silly deals to get people to keep HD or Multiroom though, I just got 20% of my main package for 6 months just to keep HD, so it is worth asking the question when the initial freebie period is up.

    Thanks for that.
As she now has two boxes, will they keep sending two viewing cards (if they still get replaced every so often)?
The two boxes will be wired to the same dish but with two separate lots of wiring (as I understand it anyway). Is that right?

  • To be honest, I would be surprised if they only offered her multi room for a short time free of charge, because once you have the box, it is yours, so it's not cost effective for them to let you have one unless they have you tied into a longer term contract on it, worth checking!

If she doesn't have multi-room, they will only send one card, regardless of having 2 boxes, as its based on subscription.

With regard to the wiring, you are right, each box will be connected to the Satelite, Sky will install all the cables for you.

You have either 2,3 or 4 cables running from the dish (1 for standard Sky box & 2 per Sky+/HD) depending on what combination of Sky boxes she has. These run to where each Sky box is installed.

The will also be a phone extension ran from the nearest phone point to each Sky box. These are a mandatory part of the multi room, now the Sky installer,or Dish Monkey, will probably say these are not needed. He is wrong! They are,he's just being lazy.Without these,Sky will be unable to get a callback from both boxes to check they are in the same home,in that case,Sky will cancel the £10 multi-room subscription charge full price for BOTH subscriptins.)

She will have a viewing card for each box, these are replaced every now & again, normally every 5 years or so.

One will be Sky+HD box (when that arrives, hopefully this week) and the other is a normal Sky box (and only needs one cable). There will be 4 wires coming from the dish.
The Sky installers in our area are very good (especially when supervised by me!!). They are going to sort out all the wiring for both the cables and the phone extensions.

I just double checked and the multi-room is free for her for 12 months (not bad going!).

My original question is more for when the multiroom finishes (she doesn't want to pay for it, it was a freebie I talked them into).

When the multi-room is finished, then simply that card will be de-activated by Sky and will stop working. No way around that unfortunately!

OK guys, thanks for all the help.
Looks like a call to Sky when the multi-room finishes to see if they will extend it for free.

Are you hoping they will extend it so that you can use it?

No, I'm hoping that they'll extend it so she can carry on using it.

You do know that once the multiroom is cancelled you can still use the second box to watch the FTA(...or is it FTV?) channels independently of the main box.
